“You were smiling.”

“I smile every day.”

She stared at me.

I stared back.

Then her eyes narrowed.

“Miss Luna says that.”

I laughed before I could stop myself.

“She does.”

“So it was her?”

“Get your jacket.”

She grinned and ran toward the hook by the door.

I grabbed my keys and followed her.

Apparently, I had two people in my life who didn’t know how to mind their business.

One of them was six.

The other one owned a bookstore.

And according to my daughter, I needed to figure out whether she was my girlfriend.

The question followed me all the way from Mila’s school to the studio, even though I told myself more than once that I wasn’t thinking about it.

By the time I unlocked the door and settled behind my desk, I’d managed to push it far enough to the back of my mind to get some work done.

The rest of my morning went the way most of them did. I answered emails, finished edits from a family session, sent off a gallery, then spent twenty minutes trying to figure out why a client’s download link wasn’t working only to realize she’d copied it wrong.

Then my phone rang.

Luna.

I answered and put her on speaker while I kept working.

“Hey.”

“What are you doing later?”

No hello.

No lead-in.

I smiled. “Why?”

“I asked you first.”

“I’m working right now.”

“I said later.”
