Maybe Mila wasn’t the only one who already knew what this was.
Mila was out of the truck before I finished telling her to wait for me.
“Slow down.”
“I am.”
“You’re halfway to the door.”
She stopped on Luna’s walkway and turned around like that somehow proved her point.
“I’m waiting.”
“Now.”
She smiled.
By the time I caught up with her, she was already reaching for the doorbell.
“Once.”
“I know.”
“You pressed it twice last time.”
“That was an accident.”
“Sure.”
The door opened before she got the chance.
“Hi, Miss Luna.”
Luna smiled as soon as she saw her. “Hey, sweet girl.”
Mila slipped past her like she lived there.
Luna looked after her. “Come on in, I guess.”
“You invited her.”
“I invited both of you.”
“Could’ve fooled me.”
She stepped aside to let me in.
“You want me to hug you too?”
“I didn’t say all that.”
“Then quit complaining.”
I laughed and leaned down to kiss her.
Her hand settled against my chest, and when I pulled back, she looked up at me.
“Hi.”
