I smiled.

“Good bigger.”

His thumb moved over my hand again.

We talked about the magazine for a while before the conversation drifted to the bookstore, then to a client Ellis had the next day who kept sending him pictures from California and asking if he could make Mississippi look the same.

“Maybe you can.”

“I can’t create an ocean, Luna.”

“You’re the photographer.”

“Not a magician.”

“That sounds like an excuse.”

He looked at me.

I laughed. “I’m just saying.”

“I’m gonna tell her you said that.”

“Don’t put me in it.”

“You put yourself in it.”

We kept talking until I lost track of how long I’d been sitting there. When I finally checked the time on my phone, it was later than I thought.

I glanced toward the hallway before looking back at Ellis.

“Can I stay tonight?”

His eyes met mine. “Yeah.”

“Okay.”

Something in his expression made me smile.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I can look at my girlfriend.”

“You seem real pleased with that word.”

“I am.”

I rolled my eyes, but I was smiling when I leaned over and kissed him.

His hand settled against the side of my neck, and when I pulled back, I didn’t go far.

“I don’t have anything with me.”

“You need something?”

“Everything I use in the morning.”

“We’ll figure it out.”
