Ellis walked in.
I glanced toward the clock, then back at him.
“What are you doing here?”
“Good morning to you too.”
“Good morning.” I smiled. “What are you doing here?”
“I can’t stop by and see my girlfriend?”
“You can. You usually tell me first.”
“Then it wouldn’t be a surprise.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“What surprise?”
He came toward the counter with a small paper bag in one hand. Naomi made a sound beside me, but I didn’t look at her.
Ellis stopped in front of me and held out the bag.
“Here.”
I looked from it to him.
“What is this?”
“Open it.”
“Why?”
“Luna.”
I took the bag.
“You’re bossy.”
“And you ask too many questions.”
“That’s not true.”
Naomi laughed behind me.
“Nobody asked you.”
I reached inside the bag and pulled out a journal.
Brown.
The words across the front stopped me.
One thing at a time.
For a second, I just stared at it.
I knew this journal.
