Everything else at the table disappears.
I grab the phone.
Tomasso notices immediately. “Ooh, that looks serious.”
“Give me a second.”
I open the email and read.
Then I read it again because I have been disappointed by this particular building too many times to trust good news on the first pass.
A grin spreads across my face before I can stop it. “Finally.”
Several conversations pause.
Ricardo looks over first. “What?”
“The penthouse passed inspection.”
That gets everyone’s attention.
Lorenzo sets down his wine. “The windows?”
I hold up the phone. “Everything.”
Tomasso leans back in his chair. “Oh, thank God.”
I look at him. “You say that like you’ve been suffering.”
“I have been suffering.”
“How?”
“You’ve lived with us for six weeks.”
“You invited me, if I recall.”
Matteo points his fork at Tomasso. “He is right.”
“I'm just kidding, Zio,” Tomasso says. “You're welcome to stay another six weeks if you want.”
“Generous.” I pause. “But no. I am moving out.”
That earns a round of reactions immediately.
Leonardo smacks both hands against his tray, contributing something enthusiastic and entirely unintelligible.
Victoria wipes mashed potato from his fingers. “Enthusiastic support from Leonardo.”
“He understands me. The only one who really does,” I say dramatically.
“He understands potatoes,” Mario says.
“I'll take it.”
Donna laughs and shifts in her chair. Mocha lifts his head at the movement, watches her for a second, then settles again when she does.
Lorenzo looks at me. “How quickly can you close?”
