“Ecstatic, really.”

“Five weeks is a long time.”

“Well, we did suggest you find another,” Lorenzo chimes in. “You could have been in another place weeks ago.”

“I could have,” I say, looking back down at the email. “But I didn’t want another place.”

Because another place would not come with the same view.

Or the same kitchen island.

Or the same bedroom windows.

My thoughts turn wicked almost immediately, replaying our reflection in the glass with the city behind us, Blair spread across the island, Blair in that bed with her hair everywhere and absolutely no interest in keeping quiet.

No, another place was never going to do.

I take a slow drink of wine to hide the smile trying to come back.

Ricardo sees it anyway.

Of course.

“You look pleased with yourself,” he says.

“I am buying a very nice penthouse.”

“That must be it.”

“It certainly is.”

And if I am already thinking about christening it properly once the keys are in my hand, that is nobody’s business but mine.

Chapter Twenty Two

Blair

The office has been relentless since the moment I walked in this morning.

My inbox keeps refreshing with new messages. My desk phone has barely stopped ringing. Martin has called twice, Diego’s office has sent three separate confirmations, and I have spent hours reviewing closing documents, checking figures, making sure the final inspection clearance is in the file, and confirming that every last piece of the transaction is ready.

Five weeks of delays have somehow turned into a race to the finish.

The penthouse finally passed inspection, and now everyone wants the sale closed immediately.

Including Diego.

Especially Diego.

I glance at the time in the corner of my computer screen.

12:17.

I have to be at the penthouse by2:00 for the closing.

Where Diego will be.

My stomach churns.
