His family is enormous and close and apparently woven through every part of his life.

That has to mean something.

Doesn’t it?

Then the other thoughts arrive.

The ones I have been trying very hard not to entertain.

Diego is single.

He has never been married. He has no children.

And nothing about the man I have seen suggests he has spent his life desperately wishing for either.

Maybe he likes being the uncle.

Maybe he likes going home alone when the family dinner is over.

Maybe he has built his life exactly the way he wants it, with freedom and women and no one depending on him when he wakes up in the morning.

Maybe a baby is the last thing he wants.

My heart clenches tightly.

I breathe in again, slower this time.

No.

I cannot do this here.

I look around without moving my head much. Carter is at his desk. Someone is speaking quietly near reception. Randall’s office door is open, although thankfully he appears to be on a call.

Nobody is paying attention to me.

I turn back to my computer and try to focus on the file.

It doesn’t work.

What if Diego is angry?

What if he thinks I am trying to trap him somehow?

The thought makes my stomach lurch for an entirely different reason.

He knows I did not plan this.

Of course he knows that. We did not plan anything about that night.

Still, knowing something rationally and hearing someone tell you they are pregnant are not the same experience.

What if he panics? What if he doesn’t believe me? What if he wants nothing to do with it?

What if I'm all alone in this?

My fingers have started tingling.

I flex them beneath the desk.
