I look up from my monitor.
“My office.”
There is something in his tone that makes Leah glance over immediately. Carter does too, but neither of them says anything as I push back from my desk and stand. I smooth one hand over the front of my skirt, mostly to give myself something to do, then cross the floor toward Randall’s office.
He is already behind his desk when I walk in.
“Close the door.”
I do.
The second it clicks shut, he gestures toward the chair in front of him. “Sit.”
I take the seat, crossing one leg over the other. “What’s going on?”
Randall leans back and studies me with an expression I do not like. There is irritation beneath the professionalism now, and unlike earlier, he is making very little effort to hide it.
“Diego Conti wants you to show him houses tomorrow.”
For a second, I think I must have misunderstood him. “What?”
“You heard me.”
I stare at him. “He wants me to show him houses?”
“Yes.”
That throws me off.
I knew Diego noticed me. The smile on his way in had made that obvious enough, and the wink on his way out had not exactly been subtle either. But there is a considerable distance between flirting with someone across an office and deciding she should be responsible for finding you a home.
“Okay,” I say slowly. “So what houses am I showing him?”
Randall’s mouth curves, but there is nothing pleasant about it. “Well, that’s on you now, isn’t it?”
A small knot forms in my stomach.
I keep my expression neutral. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, Mr. Conti specifically requested you. He doesn’t want me handling the search. He wants you.”
“Yes, I understand that part.” I sit forward slightly. “I’m asking what listings you already pulled for him.”
Randall folds his hands over his stomach. “Those were my selections.”
I wait.
He waits too.
Realization comes slowly and then all at once.
“You’re not giving them to me.”
His eyes narrow by a fraction. “You wanted to be taken seriously here, Blair.”
I look at him. “I do.”
“Then this is your chance.”
