There is barely anything there, but when I turn sideways I can see it.

The smallest curve.

I have noticed changes before, but this is different. This looks like the beginning of something. The faintest little rise beneath my lower abdomen that I could probably hide under almost anything, but I know my body well enough to see it.

My eyes burn.

“Seriously?” I whisper at my reflection.

Apparently, this is what breaks me after armed men invaded the house yesterday.

A baby bump.

I rest one hand over it and try to get myself together.

The knock comes softly a minute later.

“Blair?”

I close my eyes.

Diego waits.

He does not knock again or try the handle.

“I’m okay,” I call.

“Can you open the door?”

I lower my shirt, wipe beneath my eyes, and take a slow breath before opening the door.

Diego is standing directly outside.

He takes one look at my face. “What happened?”

“Nothing happened.”

He reaches up and brushes his thumb beneath one of my eyes. “Dolcezza.”

That is all it takes to make the stupid pressure behind my ribs come back.

I step around him and walk toward the bedroom because I do not want to have this conversation standing in a bathroom doorway. Diego follows me but gives me space while I sit on the edge of the bed.

For several seconds, I stare at my hands.

Then I say, “I don’t know what happens now.”

He leans against the dresser across from me. “With what?”

I shrug one shoulder. “With everything.”

His brows pull together.

“The restrictions are gone,” I continue. “Dr. Mehta cleared me. I can go back to work. I can go back to doing normal things. I don’t technically need to stay with you anymore.”

Diego just looks at me.

I hate that I cannot read what he is thinking.
