Shannon’s laugh erupted out of her and shook her whole body, pulling my gaze down to her much fuller breasts, free and jiggling beautifully. “Who did you ask?”

I shrugged. “People.”

She laughed until tears spilled down her cheeks, wiping them away with a sigh before she drank half the glass of milk. “This is nice, Miles. I’m glad we did this.” Her smile was genuine and that filled me with relief. Finally.

“Shannon, I have something I need to say to you.” She froze with the second sandwich half in her hand, eyes wide and wary. “I have feelings for you that go far beyond platonic, but I’m not ready to put a name to it yet. You said you told me because you wanted me to know and I need you to know that I’m not there yet, but I’m working on it.”

“Miles, the last thing I want is to pressure you. Given what you went through with your ex, I get that you’re a big gun-shy.”

Is that how she saw me? Gun-shy? “Shannon.”

“The last thing I want to do is pressure you, Miles. I’ve tried that tactic in the past and it never worked out well for me. Never.”

“That’s part of the problem,” I growled, feeling my anger grow even as I tried to keep a lid on it. “I want you to want this as bad as I do, Shannon.”

“I do, but I’m scared too, Miles. You’re not the only one who’s terrified of getting hurt, and that’s how I know you’re not ready for this.”

“The hell I’m not!” I shook my head. “If you’ve changed your mind, say that, but don’t tell me what I’m not ready for.”

As calmly as humanly possible, she pushed away from the table and stood, slapping the napkin on her plate and snatching it from the table. “Until tonight, you have been nothing short of distant and disinterested. I’m happy to see this new version of you, but I need this guy to stick around before I’m ready to risk my heart to him.”

She wasn’t wrong but that didn’t make her words easy to hear or to accept. “Go out with me.”

Shannon blinked. “Did you hear a word I just said?”

“Yes. And I think the best way to show you that this is me, that I am the guy who’s going to be here, who’s gonna show up when you need him to and even when you don’t want him to, is to let me take you out.” She was already shaking her head, thinking of two or three reasons to turn me down. “tomorrow night, I’ll pick you up at seven. Wear something that shows off your gorgeous legs.”

“Miles,” she said on a breathless sigh that sent a wave of heat through my body, quickly turning to fire.

I stood and joined her at the sink, bracketing my hands on either side of her hips. “Seven o’clock. Wear something short.” And since I was already pushing my luck by a lot, I leaned in close, smiling as my lips captured hers in a slow, hot kiss, that made her gasp.

Shannon wrapped her arms around me and pulled me close as her tongue slipped between my lips and I growled my desire, gripping her hips and pulling her close so she could see exactly how much I wanted her. All of her. The kiss grew hotter by the second, our tongues dancing together as our bodies pressed tight together, enough friction to set the whole damn place on fire. She nibbled my bottom lip and my hands slid underneath the thin t-shirt she wore, my thumbs crazing silky soft skin and then, the soft flesh of her breast.

She gasped and pulled back, green eyes wide with shock. “Miles. This is great and it’s not our problem. Clearly.”

I knew what she was saying and though it killed me, I nodded my agreement. “We are just fantastic in the sex department.”

“I recall,” she said and rolled her eyes, lips swollen as they tipped into a smile. “Vividly.”

Just what I wanted to hear. “Good. I’ll see you tomorrow at seven,” I told her and brushed a soft kiss to her lips before taking a big step back. “Sweet dreams, Shannon.”

She let out a mix between a strangled laugh and a moan. “My dreams are always sweet, Miles. What do you dream about?”

I turned to her and smiled. “You, Shannon. Always you, sometimes naked, sometimes wet, and sometimes on top, but always you. Always.” I left her with that thought, smiling as I made my way to the door.

The last thing I heard was her whispered, “Damn,” just before the door closed behind me.

Things were definitely looking up.

Shannon

Miles showed up for our date looking hotter than any man had a right to look, especially when he was planning to romance a hormonal pregnant woman, with flowers. I blinked when he shoved the colorful bouquet in my direction but I couldn’t take my eyes from the man, dressed in navy blue slacks and a light blue shirt that somehow made his brown eyes look deeper and richer. And the vest, holy hell, the vest was doing everything in its power to soak my panties. “Miles. Hi.”
