“I’ve finished her, milord,” Charlotte announced in the quiet of her husband’s chambers.
“And she desires me so quickly?
“Not so quickly. She doesn’t even know you want her.”
“Then what have you done?”
“I’ve discredited and shamed her Leonas.”
“A better candidate for that I’ve never seen.”
“Perhaps, though, he seems like most men in this realm—raunchy, proud and ruthless.
“I warn you to hold your tongue,” Mountbane warned.
“My apologies, sir.”
“Indeed. So, now you’ll turn her eyes to me.”
“As soon as I can. No woman, slave or otherwise, can turn her affections hastily from one man to the next. It is a matter of the heart that you’re dealing with. We may perform things with our bodies and let them speak without consideration of what they are doing. But our hearts, they need their time. They need to heal hurt, and seal up grief, and mend enough when they are broken to allow another lover inside. If you want her heart, not just her body, you’ll be patient, sir.”
“Ah! You disgust me,” he said shaking his head sadly.
“I do?” Charlotte queried puzzled.
“Women do.”
“True. We are more difficult than slaves.”
“And it seems that I’ll be plagued with them. What I’d give for an obedient slave,” he sighed.
“You can have as many as you like, but they are not what you want,” Charlotte reminded him sweetly. Her report finished, she gave him a playful pat on the cheek and turned to leave.
“You will produce her in my bed, loving me!” he called to her.
“Patience, Mountbane, patience,” she called back and then disappeared.

Charlotte found the maid next brooding in a castle hallway.
“My dear, how are you today?” she asked her kindly.
“Worse each day.”
“And why is that?”
“Because not only do I love Leonas, I now hate him as well.”
“Ah, you must turn away from Leonas altogether.”
“But how can I?”
“Turn to another man.”
“There are none who interest me, who are as handsome and charming.”
“Oh, but there are—you simply need to look about you. Why I know of dozens who would declare their love for you.”
