“Really happy, Lauren.” She smiled toward her father. “Ever since that night he brought you home. I mean... He whistles while he’s cooking. I hadn’t even realized he’d stopped, but as soon as I heard it again, it was so obvious that the house had been quiet. So thank you. I mean it. And I hope I’ll see you at the wedding.”

She walked off with a happy wave, while Lauren still sat in stunned silence, her mouth parted and heart pounding.

It was all nice with Jake. Even what could have been an awkward relationship with his daughter was going to be nice. And in that moment, Lauren realized that she’d planned on being alone for the rest of her life. Somehow over the past few years, she’d settled on that for herself. She’d been satisfied with it. Even pleased. But it wasn’t going to happen that way at all.

It didn’t matter what Jake called her. It didn’t matter what Lauren said or how much it scared her. Because she loved him. Already.

And she was so wrong for him.

And he was happy.

It was dangerous, just as he’d said, but it was a danger worth running into. And she was going to risk it all.
