Chapter Nine - Kyst

The following day I wake up early. It’s not too early. I mean, the sun is already out, but I am awake before Mylah, I think. I don’t hear any noise in the rest of the house. I get cleaned up and walk out to the living room. Empty, she is definitely still asleep.

Heading into the kitchen, I turn on the coffee pot then sit at the table, waiting for it to brew. Soon the warm fragrant aroma fills the kitchen. Once the coffee is ready, I pour myself a cup and sit back at the table. I take a few sips, savoring each one.

I set the cup down on the table. I think about how nice it is to have Mylah here. I mean for the company. It’s always me, by myself. The house feels less lonely right now. I pick up my coffee and take another sip. I hear the sound of footsteps, turn and see Mylah walking into the kitchen. She is still dressed in the t-shirt she wore to bed last night. She looks a little tired but very adorable. I can’t stop staring. Her strong legs are noticeable since all she’s wearing is the shirt. Her skin looks so soft and smooth.

Her long hair is down. It looks so silky and billowy as it hangs down her back. She looks so pretty now, since the fire. She has been cleaning herself up and doing her best to keep her appearance fresh. That is very obvious.

“Good morning,” I say.

She looks around like that caught her off guard. “Oh, Good morning,” she answers. Her expression looks like she doesn’t know how to react to my presence.

“Would you like to sit and have some coffee with me?” I ask.

“Okay, sure,” she replies quietly after a moment. Hesitantly she sits in the empty chair across from me.

I get up and fix her a cup of coffee before sitting back down with her. She grabs the cup and quickly takes a drink. I can tell by her mannerisms that she is once again shy and nervous around me.

After a moment of silence, I want to hear her talk again—to open up to me. “Tell me about your plans for the future,” I say, catching her off guard.

She sips her coffee and looks at me with wide eyes. I turn so I’m completely facing her. I want her to have my full attention. Shyly she sets the cup down. Her brow furrows as she tries to think of an answer.

“Well, I honestly don’t know. The vet clinic was my plan for the future. Now that it’s all gone, I don’t know what I’ll do. I guess I don’t really have a plan anymore or any money to come up with a new one. To be honest, I feel lost and overwhelmed by it all,” she admits.

I can hear the defeat in Mylah’s voice. It breaks my heart to see her this way. She’s such a sweet soul. She doesn’t deserve this.

We sip our coffee in silence as I come up with an idea. I don’t know how she’ll react to it, but I need to tell her about it. I want to do all I can to help her. “Well, you already know I used to be a movie star before I became a firefighter,” I start.

She nods and sips her coffee. “This means I do have quite a bit of money put away. So…..what if I rebuild your house and business, and you don’t have to worry?” I ask. I know that’s a lot to offer, but I really want to help her and see her happy.

Mylah blushes and puts her coffee cup down on the table. “Oh no. I’m not going to ask you to do that, Kyst. We just met and barely know each other. Besides, this is my problem to figure out,” she says, refusing politely. She nervously fidgets with the cup.

I ignore her, having already made up my mind. I grab the notepad and pen that I keep on the table for making grocery lists. Inspired, I start drawing the floorplan of the house and office. “You know what would be good? To make the vet area larger so you can care for more animals. Maybe have a little reception area in case they need to wait or just have questions,” I say, offering suggestions on how to improve the business and drawing it all.

I look up after a few minutes of silence. Mylah is so quiet I almost thought she left. I realize she is crying. She has her hands over her eyes. I put down the pen and get up from the table. I grab her hands and pull her to me. Siting back down in the chair, I cradle her in my lap.
