BRAT SETS ANIMAL FREE

"But Daddy, Mommy would've talked to me about it," I said.

Now that got Daddy's attention. He'd been slicing onions. His head propped up at my comment.

"Mommy would have listened and helped me. You said we'd be okay without her." I said. "But this is important, and you won't even talk to me about it."

Daddy put down his knife. He turned around. His eyes were tearing from the onions he'd been cutting.

It was the funniest thing imaginable. Big, burly daddy with his eyes tearing up!

"Fine." He said. "You wanna know about boys. Stay away from them. They're animals. There. We've talked."

"That's not fair." I said.

Daddy sighed.

"What do you want me to say?" He said. "I'm your dad. I don't want some sleazeball kids messing around with my baby girl."

"Daddy, I'm eighteen," I said. "And Steve isn't a sleazeball."

Daddy went to the sink. He washed his hands. He had enormous hands. I absolutely loved them!

Then he rinsed that rugged face of his with some cold water. He then took his wet fingers and smoothed them back through his wavy hair.

When he turned and saw I was staring at him, he rolled his eyes.

"What do you want me to say, Jess?" He said. "Men are animals. Okay? End of story."

I wanted to ask. How about you, Daddy? Are you an animal? But I bit my tongue.

Daddy was as big as a gorilla, and built just as powerfully. If nothing else, he certainly was built like an animal.

Daddy worked for the electric company. His job was fixing downed electric poles in places others feared to tread. He was a man's man. He liked hunting, mountain climbing, and camping.

Since my mom had died, he'd been all I had.

I guess he could have easily remarried. I knew some of my female teachers at high school that really had the hots for him. They'd even told me so!

But between work and taking care of me, Daddy claimed he had no time for dating. But I'd always wondered what the real reason might be.

"I don't think Steve could ever be an animal, Daddy." I said. "He's too nice."

"That's what you think. You have no idea what a guy's like once...once..." Daddy stopped.

"Once what?" I said.

"Well, you know? Once...you know...once you..."

"Once I give him a little kiss?" I suggested.

Daddy shrugged.

"Sure. That could be it." Daddy said. "A kiss could set a guy off. You'd be in real danger then."

Daddy nodded thinking to himself.

"So I shouldn't even kiss a guy?" I said.

"That's a good plan!" Daddy said, pointing a finger at me.

"You're absolutely useless!" I said.

Daddy shrugged.

"Just remember, you don't know a guy until you get him going." Daddy said. "You start kissing the wrong guy, and you don't know where it'll end."

"But what if it's the right guy?" I protested.

"Bingo!" Daddy said. "That's all I'm telling you. Make sure he's the right guy first."

It was my turn to roll my eyes.

"Okay, Daddy, I see. Thank you," I said.

Daddy then stooped down a little low. Down to my level. Then he turned his cheek so I could give him a little peck.

He never let me hug him!

I stepped up to give him the little peck he always demanded as thanks when he helped me.
