“Your actions have been unforgivable.”

“Listen, I already apologized for that and besides,” he pinned her with a knowing look. “You didn’t put up much of a complaint.”

Her jaw clenched. “I’m afraid your ego has finally far surpassed your intelligence, Jay Colby.”

“And your imagination has far surpassed your good judgment.”

“Well, perhaps I wouldn’t have jumped to any conclusions if you hadn’t been so horrible and insensitive these past few days.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“You’ve ignored me on every single occasion possible and instead, directed that attention on the rest of the females of Placid.”

Jay paused. A frown folded the skin across his forehead. “Wait a minute. This isn’t about me kissing you. It’s about me not kissing you…again.”

Her eyes nearly popped out of her head as she gasped. “That is the most ludicrous statement you have ever uttered.”

He grinned, placing his hands on his hips. “Is it?

“Most certainly. I wouldn’t have you kissing me again if it were to save my life.”

His brows raised as he cocked his head. “Are you sure about that?”

A fire lit in the back of her eyes and for some reason Jay found himself turned on. Placing her hands on her hips, she took a step closer toward him, trailing water behind her.

“For your information, Jay Colby, the next time I share a kiss with a man, it will be with a gentleman that is civilized, honorable and—–”

Oh hell! She was far too close. Her delicate chin was tilted all the way up as she glared up at him. Those angry but ruby lips were snapping at him only inches away from his face. Without waiting for her to finish, he reached for her and pulled her hard against his body. To his surprise, she did not put up a struggle.

Chapter 18

She tasted as good as she looked. Sweet and delectable, and oh so heavenly. It surprised him to discover her mouth, which could be so harsh and cruel, would turn out to be so soft. He plunged in deeper, but without force. No, he moved with gentle and leisurely ease. He wanted to savor the moment, savor the feel and taste of her.

She swayed before him, her long willowy neck craned all the way back, her enticing breasts leaning toward him. And Jay knew she wanted him as much as he wanted her.

He felt a spark of satisfaction and slid his hand around her waist to draw her up against his chest. Instinctively she melted into him and Jay thought nothing felt as right as it did to have this woman in his arms.

A woman who despised him. Thought so little of him. Who loved his brother.

At the thought of Ryan, a throbbing began at the back of his head. He recognized it. Knew of its origin. With reluctance, he broke the kiss.

She blinked several times, obviously dazed by the sudden interruption. Her face was so soft, so innocent, reminding him of when she was a child. A child he once adored.

With all his effort, he pulled away. “I’m sorry, Erika, I shouldn’t have done that.”

She gazed up at him baffled. He cou

ld clearly see the confusion in her eyes, how disoriented her thoughts were. No matter how much he hated to help her out, he knew he must.

“I trust you won’t mention this to Ryan.”

The look that crossed her face was far from what he was expecting. She took a step forward, her hand reaching for him. “Jay—”

He immediately took a step back, resisting her touch. “Erika, please. I don’t want to make a habit of seducing my brother’s wife.”

“I’m not your brother’s wife.”

“But you will be.”
