Dad hands me his phone across and I glance at the screen, there’s a video. Pressing play, the first thing I see is a boot slamming down onto Thane’s head. They beat the fuck out of Thane and Bugs. They grunt and blood spurts and I have to turn my head away. The sound sickening and waking Penelope.

“Swipe left and you’ll see a couple of bikes that were parked outside of his shopped are destroyed.”

“I’ll take your word on it.” I hand his phone back. He tucks it into his jeans and looks at me with a heartfelt look. He did all that for me, he promised they would pay and they did. Thane is responsible for his men so of course he got an ass whooping, and Bugs can just go to hell but where is the president of their club? I never saw him when I was there.

“Who is their president?”

“Good fucking question, I couldn’t track him down or should I say our support club couldn’t. Not sure if they truly couldn’t get to him or if they were scared of the retaliation that would blow back on them.” A heavy sigh deflates his chest. “If he was closer, I’d find and kill him myself.” He’s serious, and I know and love that about him. He protects what’s his and being here, I’m certain Penelope won’t have a scratch on her head while my dad’s around.

“Thanks, for everything,” I whisper, thankful he rained hell on those assholes when I couldn’t. Just thinking about how hard I tried to hurt them and couldn’t, makes me feel weak all over again.

A sly grin crosses his face, the violence feeding his cold heart. “Anytime for my family.”

Brushing the hair from Penelope’s face, I can’t help but wonder if she’ll have a little bit of me and my father in her; a Devil.

Sitting in my room, I want so badly to go into the room with Delilah and Penelope, but I know it’s important for them to have their time together. To bond and shit. Time ticks by slowly and I mess around on my phone, the silence of the room deafening. I can’t help but feel drawn to Delilah and meeting her daughter that feeling has only magnified. I need to be with them, if I’m not there then who will protect them and love them? Fuck it! I’m going in there. Throwing the blankets off me, a pair of sweats and socks on, I open my door and find Shadow just leaving Delilah’s room. Our eyes catch and the air fills with tension.

“A word?”

“Sure.” There aren’t any glass bottles around, is there?

I follow him down the hall and into the chapel, and he sits at the head of the table and rests his head in his hands.

“Where did you take Delilah today?” He doesn’t look up when he asks the question.

“She’s buying a building to open her own business.”

“That explains why she asked her mom about her grandfather’s will.” Both of his hands on the table, he looks right at me now.

“Did she find anything?”

“Yeah, it even has a little loft at the top for her to live, but it’s small. I don’t know if it’ll be enough room for her and Penelope.”

He sighs, looking at the wall of framed pictures of men that have been in the club over the years.

“And you, where are you living now that you’re patched in?”

Sitting up closer to the table, I rest my elbows on it and scratch the side of my face. What I want to tell him might not be what he wants to hear but it’s what it’s in my gut.

“I’ve found a two-bedroom place close by.”

He nods approvingly, but that’s not all I have to say.

“I think Delilah and Pen should come stay with me. Penelope can have her own room, and I’ll be there to keep them safe and it’s close to the club.”

He doesn’t respond, just stares at the same wall with an unreadable look on his face.

“Of course she will still have her detailing business but if she thinks she can’t have Penelope live there, she’ll pass it up and won’t peruse what she really wants to do. Ya know?” I continue, trying to get Shadow to fucking say something.

“So her having a kid doesn’t bother you?” He finally speaks and hits me with dark eyes.

Inhaling a sharp breath, I crack my knuckles. “I never thought I’d have kids and never been with anyone who had any but I love Delilah and Penelope is no different. I want to protect them, to be there for them both when they need someone and even when they don’t. Sure, Delilah is going to really fucking hate me at times when I tell her she’s fucking up but I guess it’ll be a learning experience for both of us,” I honestly tell him, spilling everything I feel into words right onto the fucking table.
