“Ma, chill out! Everybody’s pregnancy is not the same. She’s been nauseous and getting headaches since she found out. If my shorty says she not feeling well, then that’s that. I ain’t about to get on her for not feeling herself, and I’m damn sure not about to let you stand here and do it. Chill out. You already know that shit between me and you not even all that good. You trippin’.” Jabari checked his mother so I wouldn’t have to.

I could already feel it in my gut that she and I were going to exchange a few words, and baby, they weren’t going to be nice words either.

“Okay, well

it’s nice to see that you love her. I didn’t mean anything by it, though. I was just saying. Go handle your business, I got her,” she told Jabari.

He stood there for a few seconds before he grabbed my arm and pulled me away. She’d rounded the corner and left the foyer because when I turned back, she was no longer standing there.

“I could see it all in your face that you don’t wanna be here, shorty. Just do this shit for me, bae. I’ll be gone three hours at the most. That gives you enough time to get some food in your system and get some rest. When I get back, we can do whatever the fuck you wanna do, aight?” he asked.

“I don’t want to pretend that yesterday didn’t happen, Jabari. We still need to discuss that,” I let him know.

He pulled on his chin hair and then released a sigh.

“We will. When I get back, okay?” he said, and I nodded my head in understanding. He kissed my lips a few times, and like that, he was gone, leaving me in this big ass house with his mama and her big ass mouth.

I counted to ten before I headed in the kitchen area where she was. I also prayed that I didn’t have to curse her silly ass out. Finally, I made it to the kitchen, and this room was just as beautiful as the living room.

“Your home is very beautiful,” I said, trying my best to play nice.

She was standing over the stove making something. I wasn’t even sure what it was, but it smelled good.

“Thank you. My baby, Jabari, brought me this house a couple of years ago. Besides God blessing me with him, this home was the second greatest gift that I ever received from my son,” she proudly said.

I didn’t respond; I just smiled. Jabari didn’t tell me that he’d bought his mother this house. Then again, I didn’t ask. That’s how my man was, though. He wasn’t boastful, and that was one of the things that made me fall in love with him. Yes, he talked a lot of shit, but he was also humble, never going around and bragging on how much money he had. I remember the first time he told me about the shoe stores that he had, he literally was talking about it like his accomplishments weren’t anything.

“Sit down. I want to talk to you. I’m making you an omelet because I’m sure you didn’t eat. You need to feed my grandbaby. You’re skin and bones, chile, and you probably starving my baby in there,” she said.

I had only been in her home for maybe ten minutes, and this was already strike number two for me.

“I may be small, but trust me, I eat. Your son makes very sure of that,” I said, feeling the need to gather her together just for a second. That was light. If she kept on, I was going in for the kill.

She stared at me for a few seconds as if she was considering what she wanted to say next to me. Her response never came, though. She just turned her back to me and started placing the omelet that she’d made onto a glass plate. My mouth watered when she set the plate in front of me. It looked exactly like the omelets that I liked to order at Ihop. It had the perfect amount of cheese, chives, and vegetables, which was just the way I liked it.

“How did you meet Jabari? He’s so secretive, so when I asked him, he wouldn’t say. Honestly, he didn’t even tell me that he had a girlfriend. I just happened to be on the phone with him one day, and I heard you in the background. He gets that secretive shit from his daddy,” she called out.

“I met him at a club,” I said, keeping it short and sweet.

“You love him?” was her next question.

I didn’t even mind the questions because I was now carrying a child who would one day want to date, and I was sure that whoever my child brought around, I would drill them to death with a bunch of questions. That’s if Jabari even allowed him to make it through the front door, with his crazy ass.

“Of course, I love him. The fact that I’m even carrying his baby speaks volumes. I never wanted kids. It’s not that I don’t like kids because I do, I just never entertained the thought of having children of my own,” I said.

At the same time, I was using the knife and the fork to cut through the omelet.

“What is it that you do? I just want to make sure that you’re not just with my son for his money,” she said, and then she let out a sarcastic laugh.

I had to laugh at that too because she was a joke.

“That was cute. Reallll cute. Not sure what other mooching ass bitches your son has introduced you to in the past, but just know that I have my own. For the past four years, I’ve been the creative director for a very popular fashion company in Miami, which leaves me to make over six figures a year. I have my own money, my own car, and my own house. Anything that your son gives me is just an added bonus. I entertained Jabari before I even knew his status. It was after the second time that we had sex that I even found out what he did. Any more questions? I can keep going,” I said, pushing the food away, not even having much of an appetite anymore.

“I didn’t mean to upset you. I just know how a lot of women can be. I’m overprotective of my son, the same way a father would be overprotective of their daughter. I apologize,” she said, but I knew that it wasn’t sincere.

“It’s fine. Do you have a room that I can lay down in?” I asked, not even wanting to be around her ass anymore.

“Yes. It’s a guest bedroom down here. Once you round the corner, it’s the first room on the left,” she let me know.
