“What did she say?” I asked her, reaching over her to put her seatbelt on for her.

“Had you stayed, you would know,” she said with an attitude.

I chuckled because she was finally finding her voice and I liked that.

“Yeah, whatever, so what happened?” I asked as I pulled out of the parking lot.

“Nothing, it was sprained and she gave me some Ibuprofen for the pain. Why did you leave in the first place?” she asked me.

“You know why, Antonia, so please don’t play stupid,” I told her.

“I get it. You’re just like everyone else. You’re ashamed of me and that’s why you walked away!” she said and I quickly swerved the car into the turning lane and threw on my hazard lights.

“Don’t you ever let no dumb shit like that come out of your mouth

again, girl! What the fuck type of reason would I have to be ashamed of you? I walked away out of respect for your feelings! I knew for a fact that if I would have stayed a minute longer, I would have been paying your auntie a visit and you would have gone home and found her with a bullet between her eyes!” I spat.

I could tell that I had scared Antonia because her eyes were big as saucers and tears sprang from her eyes. I wasn’t trying to scare her at all, but I was damn sure trying to prove to her that I cared so much that I would off anybody in her life who I felt was a problem.

“Calm down. I ain’t mean to raise my voice. It’s your birthday and we shouldn’t be arguing,” I said, switching up my approach on the way I was handling things.

She wiped her face with her good hand and I leaned over and kissed her forehead. I looked over at the side mirror, made sure no cars were coming, and then I joined back in with the traffic.

“Where you want to go? It’s your day. Nothing is off limits for you today. Anything you want, and it’s on me,” I told her and she smiled.

“Okay, turn back around. Where I want to go is that way,” she said.

I made an illegal ass U-turn in the middle of the road and she directed me on how to get to whatever it was that she was talking about. We drove for about ten minutes and then she had me pulling into a shopping plaza.

“The store is right there,” she told me.

I looked up and this girl had pointed to a damn uniform store. I looked at her and chuckled.

“Really, why you want to come here?” I asked, looking at her ass like she was crazy. I’ll admit that I wasn’t expecting her to bring us here at all.

“You said anything I wanted, and I want some new school uniforms. I been wearing the same uniform since my freshman year,” she said, taking off her seatbelt.

I shook my head and we both got out of the car. We walked up to the door and I opened it for the two of us. Once we were inside, she walked over to the pants, told me her size and I picked her out two pair of black pants, navy blue, and khaki. Once we had the pants, we went over to the shirts and I got her about ten shirts and a sweater for school. We went up to the cash register and I paid for everything.

“What else?” I asked her, once we had gotten into the car.

“Okay, go that way,” she said.

She wouldn’t tell me where the hell we were going, she would just point shit out, making me guess where the hell we were going. About ten minutes later, we pulled up into an another shopping plaza. She showed me where to park, and this time, we were in front of Foot Locker.

This girl right here, I thought to myself. We both got out and once we were inside the store, we went over to the Converse.

“These, in a size four. I need new shoes for school,” she said, handing me a pair of all black Converse.

I looked down at her, shook my head, and gently moved her out of the way. I started telling the sales representative to get anything that I thought would look good on her feet in a size four.

Once she brought back all of the shoes, I went up front and paid for them, carrying all of her bags. This time, she had to open the door for me because my hands were full. I placed all of the shopping bags in the trunk and got inside.

“What else?” I asked her.

She laughed. “Nothing now, you just bought me almost every shoe in there, and I only needed one, but thank you so much though. All I needed was new uniforms and a new pair of shoes. I get tired of the constant stares from Tacarra and her friends,” Antonia said.

“So, nothing else? No new clothes and stuff for when you go out? None of that shit that you girls like?” I asked her in shock. I never had to beg a woman to get something when it came down to treating them.
