I shrug. “I don’t know? Maybe I was kind of, sort of hoping that if I ignored the problem, it would go away, and he’d change his mind.”

She lifts her chin toward Owen as he disappears through the front doors of the school. “Apparently, luck isn’t on your side today.”

“You have no idea,” I mutter under my breath. “Come on. Let’s go inside. And play nice,” I add, my eyes narrowing with silent warning.

“No promises––”

“Skye––”

“Fine. I’ll try to keep my mouth shut, but if Wells puts me in his class to TA for some reason, I make no guarantees.”

I roll my eyes. “Fine. Speaking of helping out with school stuff…any chance you wanna help me plan the Boo Bash?”

“For sixth grade?” she asks before swinging the school’s front door open.

I step through it and answer, “Yeah.”

“Why?”

“Wells wants me to come up with some fun ideas. He thinks it would be good for my résumé.”

“Résumé? As in, they’re actually considering you for the VP opening next year?”

With a laugh, I nudge her with my elbow. “Don’t sound so surprised, young Padawan.”

“I mean….”

“Oh, shut up,” I laugh.

“Totally kidding, Say. Seriously, that’s awesome.”

“I kind of thought putting my name into the running was a waste of time since I’m still young and kind of inexperienced, but––”

“You’re young, but you’re not that inexperienced, Say,” she argues. “They’d be lucky to have you.”

I scoff. “Yeah, well, let’s not get our hopes up too much. Especially when I still have to figure out how to make the dance fun for kids while getting the parents and Wells’ stamp of approval.”

“You got this. Have you recruited anyone else for help yet or just me?”

“Just you. But you know how Wells is. He could easily volunteer someone else to help me if he feels like it.”

“Good point. As long as it isn’t a certain gym teacher––”

“Don’t jinx it.”

With a wicked grin, she leans a little closer and drops her voice to a whisper. “Speaking of which, how’s catfishing going?”

My eyes widen before I scan the nearly empty hallway and push her toward one of the doorways to a classroom in search of privacy. “Will you be quiet?”

“I am being quiet. Dude, it’s a good thing you’re a goody-two-shoes and have never had a run-in with the law. You’d be freaking out.”

“It would help if I had the Marauder’s Map or something,” I mutter under my breath, glancing over my shoulder again.

She snorts. “You’re such a nerd. Now, answer the question. How’s catfishing Owen going?”

“It’s…not what I expected,” I breathe out, tucking my hair behind my ear.

“What do you mean? Is he falling for you yet?”
