Dina bit hard on her bottom lip, eyes roving the genteel surroundings unseeingly. Samuel’s words were all a jumble, confusing her from what she’d come here to say. Finally she turned to face him head on, drawing in a deep breath to steady her voice.

“So just what are you looking for? A brief fling maybe, where we play at being a couple for a few weeks until you get bored with being with the same woman? I’ve read about you too, Samuel. You put the ‘play’ in ‘player’, and now you want me to believe you’re interested in something real?”

“I’m well aware of my reputation. But I’m still willing to give this a shot if you are,” he said, not looking in the least perturbed by her sharp words. “I can’t be the only one thinking along these lines – or why else did you call me?”

“You want to know why I called?” Dina shot back, then sighed and tried to calm down. “Look, I’m flattered you seem to think we have some kind of chance together, but will you still think that way if things get complicated?”

Samuel’s brow arched quizzically. “What could possibly happen to complicate things?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Like maybe, a baby? What if I get pregnant?”

“Stuff like that doesn’t just happen, not if we…” Samuel’s words cut off as he took in the look on Dina’s face. The lines of worry and strain were more evident than ever and slowly, he connected the dots in his head. “That’s it, isn’t it, what’s got you so distressed? You’re pregnant…and the baby’s mine?”

The next moments passed and neither one spoke, until Dina let out a shaky laugh.

“I didn’t mean for you to find out like this. I was trying to break it to you in a more reasonable manner but nothing seemed to work. I’m hardly myself either and it’s just…I’m so…” She broke off, looking away suddenly as tears pricked her eyes.

Without hesitation, Samuel grasped her wrist with warm, gentle fingers. “Come on. We should go somewhere and talk. Really talk.”

They’d reached the outside of the restaurant and were inside Samuel’s car before Dina found the sense to put up a protest. “Samuel, wait. I appreciate what you’re trying to do but…”

Before she could finish her thought, he leaned in and lightly placed his lips against hers.

Whoa. Instant butterflies spurted in the base of her stomach, making her gasp.

The almost-there kiss pierced her deep and Dina went stiff in surprise. When she didn’t pull back, he used more pressure, deepening the kiss. He tenderly moved over her lips, probing for entrance.

Giving in to the feelings surging within her, Dina instinctively closed her eyes and opened up willingly. The first lash of his tongue exploring her mouth brought sensations to the tips of her breasts and even her toes. It felt like forever since their last kiss and it had never been anything like this…so delicately passionate and ethereal.

When Samuel finally broke the kiss and drew slowly back, Dina’s eyes fluttered open and noticed his clear blue eyes had gone a deeper, warmer shade. “I would do anything just to see your beautiful smile again. The news of the baby did come as a shock to me and I can only imagine what you must have gone through since you found out.”

Cupping her face in his hands, he paused a moment to run his gaze over her features, then added, “I’m also quite prepared to support you with any decision you make. You don’t have to go through this alone, Dina.”

His touch was as soothing as his voice, and Dina closed her eyes at the feeling of calm settling in her stomach for the first time in days. Rendered incapable of speech, thanks to the emotions rising in her chest, all she could do was nod in response to his reassuring words.

As they drove away, Dina couldn’t believe how smoothly that went. So far, anyway. All her worry and confusion of the past few days had been for nothing. Samuel was truly a good man who could be counted on whatever the situation. At least, he’d shown some unexpected sensitivity. He actually seemed almost big-brother-like, and for now she’d let him take the lead.

Samuel glanced at Dina’s face and noticed the lines of concern had disappeared from her smooth skin. He was definitely relieved about that. There was a comfortable silence between them as he headed for home. It wasn’t long before he looked over at her again and saw that sleep had taken over.

He soon pulled into the driveway of his New York residence, turned off the engine and looked at Dina for some moments. So beautiful. He gently reached across and brushed a strand of hair back from her temple, which caused her to stir awake,
