But still, she needed to make some progress on finding out who her real father was. She was still eager to connect with him, to find something that had been missing in her life. But as more men touched her, and she was filled with their seed, her quest seemed a little less urgent.

Perhaps the thing that was missing wasn’t a father, so much as it was a man.

She pushed the thought aside, practically skipping towards the mayor’s office. Maybe they’d have some kind of record or archive she could look at!

The hot sun had even permeated the mayor’s office a bit, when she walked on in the front desk was empty, and nobody was around. As she looked about the place, the old furniture, the antique wood, all so well kept, from out of the back office stepped the mayor himself.

He was a towering man, twice her age, at least, but handsome and broad in the shoulders. He wore a simple plaid shirt and jeans, with the buttons down low, showing off his hard chest. He stopped in his tracks, folder in his hands as he stopped by the filing cabinet.

“Well hey there, lil’ missus,” he said with that country twang, his rugged good looks lit up with an uneven smile. “What brings you here? Lookin’ for a job?”

“A job?”

The thought never even occurred to her, and it had thrown her off guard. She glanced around the office, tilting her head at the empty receptionist seat, looking back at him. Would a job help solve her family’s money troubles?

“Are you hiring?” she asked, chipper and feeling a little burst of energy. If she worked in the Mayor’s office, she’d have more time away, and access to all the county records! She might be able to save the farm by hitting two birds with one stone!

He pulled a filing cabinet opening, furrowing his brow with a bit of confusion as he filed away the folder in his hand.

“That ain’t why you came in here?” He asked, turning back around to face her, from behind the desk, one hand on a hip. He was a tall, handsome, older man, and had that natural charm and look of calm confidence about him at all times.

It’s what kept him as mayor.

“You just graduated, and in here you come for the first time ever, so I figured…” he began, then chuckled lowly, before nodding. “Yes, as a matter of fact I am. Old secretary just quit, gonna look after her youngin’s from now on,” he said with a smile.

“What would I have to do? Just help you with the files and phones? I’m good as gold at that! Ma always said I had the neatest handwriting and the sweetest phone voice!”

He grinned warmly at that.

“I can tell that already. Sweetest voice I ever heard in general,” he said before gesturing back to his office. “Wanna come on in then? We can do a lil’ interview,” he remarked cordially, his eyes sliding over her.

The office was big, old fashioned, but striking and well crafted. With a very large oak desk, that he went and stood beside after shutting the door behind them.

“Don’t s’pose you brought a resume since you weren’t lookin’ for a job to begin with, huh?” he asked.

Brittany laughed, shaking her head a little. “Nope, but I can tell ya right now, my Ma taught me since I was a girl, and I always made her and Pa proud with my assignments, and I’ve been helping on the farm since I could first walk.”

He gestured to the chair in front of his desk, then sat himself down on the corner, with one knee raised.

“Sounds real promisin’,” he said with a bright smile, the office hot and a bit stuffy, especially with that door closed. She could make out his chest glistening with a bit of perspiration through his open shirt. “No problem with instructions, I take it?”

“No, sir! I always want to do the best, and you’d never have to tell me twice what you need done. Especially if it’s the difference between a paycheck at the end of the day or not!”

Brittany beamed, her blue eyes glittering as she looked at him, thinking about how proud and relieved her Ma would be for the extra money coming in.

“Well, you’d be a real pretty and peppy face to have ‘round here,” he said in his deep, husky voice, reaching a hand out, brushing the backs of his fingers along her smooth cheek. “Tell me,” he began, licking his lips, “you got a boyfriend? Any plans to settle down and have some kids real soon?” he asked.

Instantly she knew that he didn’t want the same thing that had happened to his old secretary to happen to her, and she shook her head.

“No, sir. I’m single as can be,” she said with a smile, clearly not counting the afternoon’s trysts as a long term, committed affair. They certainly weren’t anyone she was thinking of settling down with. “My real concern right now is just making sure my Ma’s cared for.”

“Well ain’t that sweet,” he said with a broad smile, his fingers brushing along her ear and over her hair momentarily. “Now normally ya gotta come in here with a resume, references and all that…” he began, pausing as he ran his tongue along his lips. “But… you look to me like a girl that’s willin’ to go above and beyond, am I right?” he asked, his voice a bit lower as he looked down at her, studying her ample chest, barely kept in check inside her tight top.

“Of course! I’d have you coffee ready when you come in in the morning, and I’ll lock up after you at nigh

t,” she said with a bright smile and an eager wiggle in her seat. He could be the answer to at least some of her problems, and there was no way she would slack off!

He slid a hand down to her shoulder, grasping it warmly as he smiled.
