“Now, if I had never known you,” Jackie was saying, her voice already a little slurred, “then Tara would have been the woman for the job. She has been my saving grace ever since I joined Price Advertising.”

Jackie playfully fell into one of the girls’ lap, a blonde with a tight black dress cut low enough to display her cleavage and the upper mounds of her breasts.

The woman giggled along with Jackie as she wrapped her arms around her, looking up at Collette with a devilish smile and eyes that sparkled with mischief.

“So you’re the girl who’s stolen my chance to shine,” Tara winked.

“I’ve got the years of friendship to my advantage,” Collette smiled back, instantly liking the blonde.

Tara’s eyes ran up and down Collette’s body, scanning her quickly. “Apparently more than that.”

Collette felt her cheeks heat up, surprised at how bold the woman was, almost instantly self-conscious.

“Now, I want you to take extra good care of Tara for me,” Jackie said, standing up clumsily as she wrapped an arm around Collette’s neck. “She’s been good to me, and I want her to feel extra special this evening.”

Collette laughed. “I thought my job was to take care of you,” she said.

Jackie winked at her. “Believe me, sweetie,” she smiled wickedly. “By the time this night is through, you’re going to be carrying me home.”

CHAPTER TWO

Jackie quickly gave her a peck and pushed her into the booth, Collette finding herself thrown in the midst of the women as they made room for her.

Before she settled in, the shots had arrived and Jackie had begun making a fuss about marriage and finalities before ordering everyone to down their drinks and order more.

“She really knows how to party,” Tara laughed.

Collette smiled at the blonde, pressed up beside her and closer than she would have comfortably preferred.

“She’s been a wild cat since college,” Collette said.

p; “I bet,” Tara said, lighting a cigarette and offering one to Collette. “She’s definitely turned the office around. Made my life a lot more interesting, that’s for sure.”

“Well, you’re in for a treat,” Collette smiled, puffing on the cigarette as a second shot was placed in front of her. “Besides me, I haven’t really met anyone who’s been able to keep up with her.”

Tara raised an eyebrow and stared long and hard at Collette. “Is that a challenge Miss Maid of Honor?”

Collette laughed and shook her head. “God no,” she said. “I haven’t done anything half as crazy as college for years now. This is the most fun I’ve had in a while.”

“I find that hard to believe,” Tara said.

Collette smiled at the blonde, a little taken aback by how interested she seemed in her. Jackie must have told her a lot about their college adventures.

Since then, Collette had basically kept a very low profile, her outings limited to those that involved colleagues and innocent lunches. Every now and then she’d meet up with Jackie and be coaxed into recapping the college life, but she had always been the sober one at the end of the night.

Besides, they had always needed a designated driver, despite Jackie’s constant protests that she could drive.

“Work keeps me grounded,” Collette admitted.

“What do you do?”

“I’m a teacher,” Collette said proudly. “So, I basically have to maintain a socially acceptable lifestyle. You never know whose parents you might bump into in the most unexpected places.”

Tara laughed at that and held her drink up in the air. “Well, then, let’s make this a night to remember,” she said. “I have a feeling we’re going to be really good friends, you and me.”

Collette smiled as Tara gave her a peck on the cheek, then like a distracted child, ran off toward the dance floor.
