CHAPTER ONE

Kayla Thompson was sick and tired of l

ife. At 25 years old and still completely unattached, she was beginning to break down from the stresses that her mother constantly put on her.

Sometimes she thought that if she had to suffer through one more phone call or weekly family dinner full of comments about “finding a man” and “making babies,” she was going to fling herself off the nearest bridge and not even think twice about it.

As a matter of fact, it was that thought that made her realize she might need to take a break and get away from it all.

So it was that she found herself, a few days later, stepping off of a plane and onto the sunny soil of the Bahamas. Technically, it was an all-inclusive resort in the Bahamas, but she wasn’t about to nitpick her choice of getaways over a minor thing like that.

She’d found the first affordable deal she could get her hands on and hopped the next flight away from her nagging mother and the feeling that she was never going to be quite what her family wanted her to be.

Now that she was in the Bahamas, it already felt like a world away. She could really get used to being here, she thought, as she climbed into the taxi that was going to take her from the airport to the resort.

She was the kind of woman who really looked like she belonged in a tropical paradise: long blonde hair, big green eyes, and a perennial tan that she got from her late afternoon jogs with her poodle back home.

Dressed in a hip-hugging skirt that fell more freely around her knees and a matching tank top, she really did look the part for her island vacation.

It didn’t take long for her to reach the resort, haul her luggage from her taxi to her room, and immediately head back outside again to soak up some of that healing sunshine.

It was mid-afternoon by the time she reached the massive, shimmering swimming pool in the center of the resort, and she was happy to see that she wasn’t the only one with a margarita on her mind.

With a little hurried skip of excitement, she made her way over to the poolside bar.

“I’ll have a margarita,” she said to the bartender, who nodded with the boredom of a man who had made a thousand of the same drink already that day, and started to work on hers.

“Yikes. Couldn’t be more original?” said a voice from a few seats down.

Kayla whipped her head around quickly to see who was taunting her. “Excuse me?”

The voice belonged to a woman who was sitting in the center of the bar, sipping on an iced drink in a tall glass.

She had dark skin, brown eyes, and short black hair cut into a stylish little pixie ‘do that tapered off down her neck in a strangely enticing way. Kayla stopped herself before she looked too long at the woman’s graceful, if short, build.

“I said, your drink is boring,” said the woman, with a smirk. Her eyes darted back down to her own glass as she took a long sip. “Let me guess. You’ve never been to a resort before?”

The bartender handed Kayla her margarita and stepped away again quickly, as if he wanted to avoid the conversation. “No, I haven’t, but I don’t see what that has to do with liking a good margarita,” said Kayla.

The woman held up her glass and replied, “This is a long island iced tea, and I already feel stupid enough for ordering it, but at least it’s something more powerful than your fru-fru drink.”

“Fru-fru drink? You do know these have tequila in them, don’t you?”

“Barely any,” said the woman. “What’s your name anyway? I’ve been here a few days already and haven’t seen you around.”

“I just got here a little bit ago,” said Kayla, irritated by this obnoxious woman’s behavior and trying to chug her margarita.

Unfortunately drinking it too fast gave her a touch of brain freeze, and she had to slow down and close her eyes tightly for a few seconds to fight it off.
