I shook my head, not understanding what the hell was going on. “Chris, just tell me what’s wrong, please. I thought we were best friends.”

“I thought so, too.”

“And what? You no longer think that way? Why not? What did I do?”

“You didn’t do anything. It’s not you. It’s me.”

I sighed and leaned my forehead against the door. “Isn’t that the same speech you gave Greg?”

“Just leave me alone, Janet. I’ll be leaving at the end of the semester and you won’t ever see me again.”

“What?” I couldn’t believe what she was saying. “Why would you do that?”

“It’s for the best.”

I slammed my palm to the door. “You’re not making any sense. Just open the door and we’ll talk face to face, heart to heart.”

“I can’t do that. If I open the door, I might not be able to stop myself.”

Now I was really confused. “Stop yourself from doing what?”

Christina didn’t answer.

“Christina, if there’s something you want to tell me, just go on and tell me. I promise I’ll listen.”

She didn’t answer.

“You’re saying this is for the best, but you’re hurting me right now. And I can tell you’re hurting, too? How can that be any good?”

Still nothing.

“Please,” I begged. “You’re my best friend. No matter what you say, that won’t change.”

For a while, the silence persisted, but finally the door opened and Christina was standing in front of me with a dreadful look on her face.

“You promise it won’t change?” she asked hopefully.

“I promise,” I said, swallowing the lump in my throat as I waited for her to tell me what was bothering her.

Christina took a deep breath. “Remember when you saw me with Greg? When I turned him down?”

“I remember.”

“The reason I did that is because… because I didn’t like him.”

“Obviously.”

“It’s not just Greg,” she said, slowly shaking her head. “I don’t like any boy. I’m just like you.”

I frowned at her. “Chris, I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“You don’t like guys because you’ve been hurt by one,” she said, taking a deep breath. “I don’t like guys because… well… shit, Janet … I like girls.”

Wow. I wasn’t expecting that. I muttered, “You do?”

“I do,” she said with big tears I her eyes. “And to make matters worse, I think I’ve fallen in love… with you.”

All I could do was blink at her. I was either stupid or blind or both. How the heck could I have missed something like this?
