I stopped to look at some crocheted dishcloths the Episcopal church ladies had made, and they bragged on how spacious the booths were and how nice it was to have shade from the cover. I smiled and they cooed quietly over Cooper without waking him. After a minute, Noah led me away from them.

“I got the rest of the things on the list,” he said, showing me the basket. “Now let’s find some shade for that little guy and we’ll have some lunch.”

I followed him to the beautiful lawn and watched him spread a quilt for us to sit on. I drank some lemonade, thirsty from walking, and smiled at him. I was so incredibly happy I didn’t even know how to put it into words.

“I love that smile,” he said, and I felt my cheeks go pink with pleasure.

Noah unwrapped our sandwiches while I unhooked the baby carrier and lifted Cooper out of it. He opened his big eyes that were so much like Noah’s and gave a cute baby yawn.

“I think he’s hungry,” I said.

Then I reached in the diaper bag for the nursing cover so I could feed the baby. I felt around in the bag, trying to find the big cotton bib thing I used to cover up when I was breastfeeding Cooper. Just when I thought I’d found it, my hand hit something hard. I pulled it out and saw that it was a small white cardboard cube. I lifted off the lid. Inside was a ring with a single diamond on the band. I looked at Noah, surprised.

He nodded, “Marry me, Nic?” he said with his devastating grin.

“Yes!” I squealed. Cooper made a grunt of dismay and grabbed my shirt in his little fist as I leaned over so Noah could kiss me. He slipped the ring on my finger and then helped me find the nursing cover so I could feed our son.

“We’re getting married!”

“The sooner the better,” he said. “I’m ready for you to make an honest man of me. You and this boy are everything I’ve ever wanted. I love you, Nicole.”

“I love you back,” I said, and I couldn’t stop smiling. Just when I thought I couldn’t be any happier, Noah went and got me an engagement ring.

The End
