I checked my makeup to make sure I was still presentable, and I tried to wait a few minutes for the effects of the alcohol to quiet down. I wasn’t really relishing the idea of sitting there, drinking sodas while the rest of the team got totally shitfaced and ended up acting dumber and dumber. Those people always tended to attack the most sober person there.

But I had to go back and try to hack it anyway. I wasn’t going to let them bring me down. I had to prove I was one of them.

I sighed and took another look at myself in the mirror. As I walked out, I almost collided with one of the strippers stepping off stage. He was fully nude, and his hard, long dick was almost touching me. By reflex I had to take a quick step back, almost jumping.

“Shit. I’m sorry,” I said.

“Don’t be sorry,” he replied. He held my eyes and then looked down at his dick which he was now casually stroking. I hated that I was a little turned on by it, but I was also a bit repulsed by the way this random stranger was doing this with me that close to him. “If you want a dance with me… just ask. I’ll make it worth your while, baby.”

That pissed me off. I very nearly grabbed his pecker and twisted it off. But instead of resorting to violence, I simply looked him in the eye and said, “No, thanks.”

Then I walked back to my table.

“Hey, what did that guy say?” Susie asked me when I sat down at the table.

“Oh, he wants to get it on with me in a lap dance.”

“What? And you said no?”

“Yes, I don’t even know that guy’s name. Besides, how many random skanks do you think he does that to a night? Hell no.”

“I’m drunk enough,” said Susie. “I’ll go.”

That Susie was a crazy one. “Wow,” I said. “That is crazy. You need to slow down.”

“Well, fine,” she said. “How about you do this last shot for me?”

I shook my head. “No thanks. I’m just fine with my club soda.”

I took a long sip and smiled at her. “Yummy,” I said.

She shook her head and downed her shot.

I wondered if Susie might have a problem the way she kept doing shot after shot, even after all the other girls had stopped. She was out of control. She kept running up to the dancers on stage and dancing with them, hugging them, and pulling on their dicks. They didn’t seem to mind at all. They were all used to it.

And eventually the other girls started to join Susie in downing more drinks. I couldn’t believe that the bartender wasn’t cutting them off. This was crazy.

I wasn’t sure how many more shots the girls did. In fact, I couldn’t remember the rest of the night. All I do recall is that I started feeling a little queasy and then the room started spinning a lot and everyone’s voice sounded so far away with some kind of echo on them. What was happening to me? I… shit…I was really in trouble…

Chapter Nineteen

Lance

I was daydreaming, almost totally asleep at the lounge table when the horn blasted and woke me up off my feet. I jumped to my feet and ran to get my gear on. It had been a slow week. And to have a real live call was exciting. Finally, I could do some real work instead of training drills, busy work, and weight lifting.

We were on the truck within two minutes heading out towards the fire. It was about six blocks away through heavy traffic, so the horn was running full speed as we drove through the streets. I was still half asleep. I hadn’t been sleeping that well lately. In fact, I’d been sleeping just a few hours each night and then I would be up pacing the floors. Sometimes I made it back to bed, but most of the time, I didn’t.

It was becoming a bit bizarre, the routine, if you could even call it that. I’d somehow messed up my normal sleep patterns, now I was starting to doze off at random times during the day.

I knew what was causing it. This had all started when Kat left me. Did she really leave me? Or did she run towards something else? Yeah, that was probably a much better way of wording all that. And now, she was off doing her thing, being happy, living her life, and probably not thinking a damn thing about me. Fuck. I missed her so much. I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be this nuts over a woman. I needed her. I damn well loved her.

I wasn’t sure she had any of those feelings for me. We never texted anymore. I was careful about not texting her very much, but even the few I did send she would not reply to half the time. I realized she was busy, but she only moved four hours away. She could pick up the phone and make a call occasionally, right?

When we got to the fire, I was amazed at how big and out of control it was. Flames were pouring out of the windows. This was definitely one of the worst fires I’d ever seen in all my years years on the job. And from the report that had come in, there were people in there.

I jumped off the truck with Joey, one of our veterans, and the two of us ran up to the house where we began chopping at the door with an axe. The door crumbled under the onslaught of the axe and we quickly ran inside.
