My stomach’s rumbling like an alarm clock on Monday morning and I’m still in the office. I’m working for Stern Investments for the summer, but the company should be called Slave Driver’s Investments because the CEO’s a workaholic. I’ve been working like a dog, so I can get my diploma and be a qualified secretary.

Unfortunately, it comes at a price. I’m living in a box, the only one I could afford in the city because everything’s so damn expensive here.

Back home in Kansas, I have everything I need… from my boyfriend, Leo to my family. Here, I just have this job, four walls and nothing else. I suppose, being busy at work keeps my mind focused on my goal. I’ve been here two weeks, and I’ve recovered from work on the weekends and during the week I tend to work twelve hours a day.

My phone’s ringing and my stomach’s cramping like crazy. I don’t

want to answer it because I want to eat - dinner and lunch at the same time. The nearby Chinese has great prices, and with my tight budget, I have no choice but to eat from whoever’s got a discount going on.

Damn! Leo’s calling again.

“Hey, babes,” I smile thinking about his blue eyes and dirty blonde hair. To say that I’m crazy about him is a bit of an understatement. We’ve been dating since high school, and I know that he’s less than happy about my decision to come here.

“Where are you?”

“I’m in the office,” I sigh thinking about the four walls and the place that I’m calling home for the next six weeks. From the time I rented it, I realized that it’s nothing like the picture. I was naive to think that it would be the same as the photos on the Net. Apparently, the owner took a picture of the room that’s rented and forgot to update the site with the room that I've rented.

Apparently, that’s a scam that most landlords are carrying out according to Heather who works in Finance. Besides, she said that I'd be lucky to get anything at the same rate, so I should stick it out. Easy for her to say, I miss home like crazy.

“I’ll call you when I get…”

“No, I just called to tell you something.”

I stand up and head towards my boss’s office; he must have left the light on because I’m sure he's gone home.

“What?” I blurt out as I stand and wait for him to tell me what's on his mind. I have a clue, which is the same thing that he's been threatening to do since I left home.

“It’s over.”

“No,” I start to cry as I think about my high school sweetheart. The one that I've vowed to marry. I'm trying to keep my virginity for him so that I can give it to him on our wedding night. He said that he understood when we were in high school, but ever since I told him that I want to be a secretary, he’s been less than understanding. Everyone in my family works on the farm. His family included, he doesn’t understand why I’m not happy to just have four kids and be a farmer’s wife, like all the women in both our families.

“You want big things. To go to college. Get a degree.”

I shake my head as I start to panic, “No, I just want us to be happy.”

“You mean that you want to be happy. Look Dede Wells keeps asking me out, and she’s more the kind of girl for me.”

The slut that tried to sleep with you at Prom and lives in a trailer. That Dede Wells?

Over my dead body!

“Isobel you there?”

“Yes, and I want to show you something. Go on live chat.”

“There’s no point…”

“Please, please Leo?”

He hangs up before I get the chance to explain that I’m doing this for me. I don't want to just be a farmer's wife; I want more than that. Why is it so hard for him to understand?

I bet his friends, Neil and Paul are laughing at him. Telling him things like I'm probably cheating on him with some city boy.

I put on the video chat with my hand’s shaking and I look around one more time to make sure that no one else is around. No one stays in the office this late, apart from me. I could go back to my desk, but just in case I think that it’s better to do this in Christian’s office, so if someone is in the office they won’t see what I’m about to do.

“Leo, please don’t leave me for Dede.”

“You need to know that this hurts me too.”
