“I understand that too, but…”

“But nothing. You need to find out if Jackie’s all right.”

“She wasn’t there when it happened. Her and Baby Chris had just left before the shooting started,” Yarissa said.

“Was anybody hurt?”

“Four dead, fourteen were taken to the hospital.”

“Fuck! First me, now this.”

Rain laid back in bed and thought for a moment about being careful what you wish for. Less than twenty-four hours ago, she was in her office, bored out her mind and desperate for some action. She had even got up to make the rounds, looking for something to get into. Not knowing that it was waiting right outside her door.

Rain closed her eyes and in her mind’s eye she could see Yarissa looking up from her tablet.

“You out?”

“Yeah. I’ma hit a couple of spots.”

She could hear and see herself like it was happening in slow motion. She could see Omari and Nelson standing and following her into the club. Rain could see Fantasy at the bar surrounded by men falling all over themselves. She remembered wondering if Jada West was in the city, but deciding that she didn’t care enough to ask.

Rain could see the bright lights speeding down the street toward her. “Get down!” Rain could hear herself yelling and reaching for her guns.

The first shot hit her in her right shoulder when she was firing back and running for cover. The next five hit Rain in her chest; the vest took care of those, but the impact took her off her feet. She caught the last one in her left leg as she was going down and hit the ground.

Hard.

“Oh, shit!” Leo, the head of front door security yelled and rushed to Rain. He checked her pulse. “Mileena, this is Leo at the front door.”

“Go for Mileena,” she said as she walked through J.R.’s.

“I have shots fired out here. Rain is down! Repeat Rain is down!” Leo shouted and Mileena picked up her pace. “But she’s alive.”

“Keep the crowd back. I’m on my way,” Mileena said, thinking, you can’t kill Rain Robinson, that bitch is invincible, as she approached Fantasy.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

Mileena just looked at Fantasy like she was crazy and kept going toward the front door.

Like I got time to stop and explain shit to that bitch.

Outside of J.R.’s, more security had arrived to secure the scene. They were pushing back and containing the crowd, snatching cell phones of people that were recording and breaking them on the spot.

Leo went to check on Omari and Nelson. Even though he could tell by looking at their bullet-riddled bodies that they were dead, he checked for a pulse anyway.

On the way to the front door, Mileena took out her phone, put on her Bluetooth and made a call. “Hello,” a sleepy voice answered.

“This is Mileena Hayes at J.R.’s. Rain Robinson has been shot. I have instructions to call this number.”

“Yes,” Glenda said and told Mileena what to do.

“I understand,” she said and ended the call just as she arrived outside.

With the help of security yelling, ‘make a hole’ and pushing people out of the way, Mileena fought her way to where security had surrounded Rain. By that time, Rain had regained consciousness. She signaled for Mileena to come closer. “I need for you to get me to Perry.”

“Already taken care of,” Mileena said as Rose arrived.

“Oh my god,” she said when she saw Omari and Nelson’s bullet-riddled bodies. She turned to Leo. “What happened?”
