"And what's that supposed to mean?" she asked stepping to me, before I cold cocked her in the dead center of her nose.

She fell to the ground like a Titan and all the kids laughed as she struggled to get up. I jumped on top of her and punched the dummy until she passed out. She never messed with Jacob or me again.

We were tight from that day forward. Down like two flat tires. We even went to prom together our junior and senior years, because one or the other didn’t have a date each year.

We put our friendship over everything. When we graduated high school, we went on to Princeton to complete our college career. To everyone who knew us, it was only right for us to become one. But when Jacob didn’t show me that type of attention, I fell hard for my ex-fiancé, Rick, which turned out to be a mistake when he left me at the altar.

Jacob had thrown his life into his family's business. His main interest was keeping his family's legacy alive. I could appreciate that, but there was no place for me in that equation. I tried to work with him and help him with the business, but eventually I got in the way.

Therefore, I was happy when I found Rick; all the way until my wedding day. Jacob watched me fall apart on what was supposed to be my special day, as did three hundred other invited guests when Rick didn’t bother to show up. I found out he had another woman and a kid three weeks later when I caught up with him at his job.

I was devastated, but figured Rick was just going along with the wedding because it was my dream to be a beautiful bride. The punk didn’t know how to tell me I was his mistress.

Jacob was there through it all. He drove me home from the chapel, speaking life back into my spirit that day, reminding me of the fighter that was within me. Even as the memory of all of those people staring at me, when I stood at the door waiting for my fiancé to show up, made me want to kill myself, he held me close to him and made me promise to be the woman that he knew. He kissed me on the cheek, anticipating my need for affection. That kiss led to a kiss on the other cheek, and then finally my lips. His tongue slipped into my mouth and we melted against one another. The passion behind his kiss was the most intense passion I ever felt.

He glared into my eyes and made me promise to never think about killing myself again. “Don't you ever leave me," he said as he hugged me close. He broke our contact to say, "I'm sorry for kissing you like that, it's just that…"

I didn’t let him finish his sentence. I pulled him close for another kiss. Before we knew anything, my wedding dress was off my body and on the floor, and Jacob was thrusting his unsheathed penis inside of me. The memory of my fiancé slowly faded away as he made the sweetest love to me.

Our first time was a bitter-sweet memory; one that made me hurt even more when I looked at my cell phone, which had not received one call from him for months, not even to see how I was doing. Not only had he been ignoring my calls, but he also had up and ran off to Georgia behind the first podunk heifer that smiled at him. As one of the richest men in the world, I would have thought he had better sense than that.

I was the kind of classy woman a man of his means was supposed to put on his arm, not Destiny. "What more could he ask for in a potential wife?" I asked myself as I wandered aimlessly around my beautiful home. The amenities Jacob added meant nothing without him around. I plopped down onto the plush sofa, picked up the phone and called him again. My call went to voicemail, once again. This time, he didn’t even let it ring but once.

"I tried to give you one last chance, before I took matters into my own hands. Why are you rejecting me?" I yelled, throwing my phone hard against the wall.

Tears sprang from my eyes as I got up from the sofa and rushed into the bedroom.

"This is it! I'm going to end this for once and for all," I said looking at the pistol on my dresser. I put it inside my mouth and willed my finger to squeeze the trigger.

"If we can't be together, I will just end it all," I said, this time pressing as hard as I could against the trigger, but the safety was on. Damn.

I sat in the middle of my floor crying, wondering why no one would love me. I picked up my phone and called the Suicide Hotline, which was on speed dial, since I’d sought medical treatment for suicidal thoughts before.

"Hello, this is Stacey from the Suicide Hotline. How may I help you?"

I eased the gun back down and let it fall onto the floor. "I'm about to kill myself, if I don’t get need help," I admitted, as I sniveled.

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

DESTINY

Interrupted

My eyes opened to find Jacob smiling down on me. "How long have you been awake?" I asked, smiling and running my hand up and down his toned arm.

"Hmm…about an hour."

"You should have got me up."

"You looked like a sleeping angel. I wouldn’t dare wake you from your beauty rest."

I moved on the bed, looking around him. "What time is it?"

"It is two o’clock."

"In the morning?”

“Yeah. We still have plenty of time before morning light," he said.
