“Why doesn’t that surprise me? Your work was always most important, so I don’t know what to tell you. Montana didn’t plan to get sick," I said.

"I know," he grumpily replied and glared at Jacob who had a snarling glare, as well.

Junior came out of the room wearing shoes and carrying his luggage.

"Come on, let's go," Jacob said.

“Bye son,” Montie said and hugged Junior.

We left Montie’s house with him watching us from the porch. Jacob put the luggage in the trunk and helped to load Junior into the vehicle. I put Montana in her car seat.

"We’re going home, sweetie," I said when she briefly opened her eyes. I kissed her forehead and closed her door.

As I got into the passenger seat, I realized Montie had gone inside. He stared out the window with slump shoulders and a look of defeat in his eyes as we drove away.

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

DESTINY

Hot and Cold

I walked out of Montana’s room, once she was back to sleep, and joined Jacob sitting on the couch in the living room. I sat down beside him, laid my head down his shoulder, and held his hand.

"How’s she doing?" he asked.

"She’s good. Thanks for standing up for us at Montie’s house. I don’t know why he acts like that."

"The man lost the best thing that happened to him. I know why he’s mad about that, but it’s too late. It’s my job to love and protect you now. I’m not yielding my responsibilities for one second."

"I love you." I brushed a soft kiss across his lips.

"Mommy?" I pulled from the kiss and turned to find Junior standing in the living room.

"Hey, what are you doing still awake?"

"I can’t sleep. Can I sleep with you?" he asked.

"Sure. Go get in my bed and I’ll be right there."

Junior ran through the hall and into my bedroom.

"You are a great mom, Destiny," he said.

"You forgive me for cutting our night short?"

"Baby, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Your kids come first, so there is nothing to forgive. Now, if you were the type of woman to put your needs first, that’s unforgivable."

"Will I see you tomorrow?" I asked.

"I was thinking about camping out on this couch, if that was alright with you," he patted the couch.

“It’s a sweet gesture and I would love to wake up knowing you’re in the next room, but that couch won’t be very comfortable,” I said, taking in his tall stature, which made the furniture look even smaller.

"Oh baby, don't worry about me being comfortable. My comfort comes in knowing that I’m here to protect you all. Now, go take care of Junior and I’ll see you tomorrow morning."

I blew a kiss in his direction and smiled all the way to my bedroom. I was going to sleep well.
