“See you boys later.”

“Can I at least get your bag for you?” Matt asked, looking like a sick puppy.

“No, I have it, but thanks for taking care of me when I was sick last night. I feel brand new today,” I said and smiled.

“Baby, I will always take care of you,” Matt said.

Cody giggled, as I smiled.

“Thank you, and I’ll talk to you soon,” I said.

I hopped out of the car with my overnight bag and trekked up to my apartment. I was barely inside, when I heard my phone signal a text message.

It was Dana.

Dana: Hey girlie. It’s been a while. Meet me at El Havana in twenty minutes. I won’t take no for an answer. :)

I smiled at the message. She must have been stalking my place to know that I just got home. I looked around at my plants and mail and decided to take care of them later. I sent my response back to Dana.

Me: On my way!

Without even sitting down, I grabbed my keys and headed out of my apartment. When I got to the restaurant, Dana was sitting at our table. She stood when she saw me.

“Hey love!” she said, hugging me as I got to the table.

“Hey!” I said. We were at our favorite Cuban restaurant, yet again, and I was so glad to be hanging out with my girl, once again.

I looked at the menu, though we both knew what we wanted and placed our order as soon as the waitress got there. When she left, Dana started in.

“How’ve you been? It’s been so long since we talked. I’m assuming you still work with the Wilde family.” She giggled as she took a drink from her wine and looked at me with a side eye.

“Oh yes…I’m still working there, and things are…well, they are going great actually.” I left it vague, not really sure what I wanted to say about my relationship with Matt. “Yeah, still working there. Cody is great,” I reiterated.

Dana smiled. “I’m glad to hear that, but you haven’t said anything about Cody’s uncle. What do you think about him?”

My soul lit up at the mention of Matt. I had to hide my blush from my friend. She knew me almost as good as I knew myself. “Oh well…he’s really nice,” I said, looking off toward the doorway as if I were expecting someone.

“Really nice, huh?” Dana laughed. “Girl come on…he’s better than nice. He’s fine, built and has a nice ass too.” She laughed and gave me a high five; I chuckled and shrugged.

“Really? Haven’t noticed.” That got us both laughing again, and it took the pressure off me being honest about how I really felt about Matt. Thankfully, Dana let it go and went into discussing what was happening with her virtual assistant clients.

Our food came, and we ate and finished off our wine, all the while talking about anything but Matt and Cody. I thought maybe I would escape having to discuss my present employer/lover. However, when we got done eating and were j

ust sitting there, Dana spoke up.

“So, I’m guessing that you’re watching Cody tonight while Matt goes to his party.”

I frowned.

He hadn’t mentioned a party to me, and we had talked about quite a lot over the past few days. “Party?” I asked, trying to remain nonchalant about it.

“Yeah. There’s a celebrity couples’ party for charity going on tonight. Everybody who’s anybody will be there in rented clothes and expensive jewels,” she laughed. “It’s no kids allowed, so I just assumed Matt would’ve mentioned it to you, so someone could stay with Cody. It’s on his schedule of events for today. I checked it before I met you here.” Dana took a sip from her wine glass, not realizing the thoughts that were running through my mind. “But maybe he’s leaving Cody with a friend,” she added more fuel to the heap of fire already burning.

Not only hadn’t Matt mentioned a party to me, he said nothing about needing a babysitter. My face had to be a mask of confusion at a time when I needed to be strong, so Dana wouldn’t catch on to my internal turmoil. Yet, that didn’t seem to work out all too well.

“Um…no…he hadn’t mentioned. Maybe he’s getting someone else,” I stated.

“Oh. That’s interesting, because he’s real funny about who he allows around Cody. From what I get about him, he’s very overprotective,” Dana replied, and she was right. She had no idea how interesting it truly was.
