It took her a moment to recognize the dark-haired young man who stood behind her. And then she remembered. “You're Greg, right? From the boat.”

He nodded, looking relieved. “I have a message for you. From Daniel.”

B.J. clutched his arm. “Daniel? Where is he? Is he okay?”

“Hang on just a minute.” Greg flipped open a cell phone, pressed a button and held it to his ear. “I've got her,” he said a moment later. “She looks fine.”

B.J.'s fingers tightened on his sleeve. “Is that Daniel? Can I talk to him?”

He shook his head. “Yeah, I'll tell her,” he said into the phone.

B.J. stared numbly at him as he closed the phone and slipped it into his pocket. “Where is he?”

“He had to leave,” Greg replied. “I've been instructed to make sure you get on a plane back to Texas.”

“I don't understand. Daniel left?” Just like that? Without a goodbye or anything?

“Well, he's gone now. He was waiting to make sure you were safe.”

Across the lobby, two men wearing dark suits and carrying walkie-talkies entered an elevator and disappeared. A search of the premises? Were they looking for Daniel?

“I don't know what's going on,” she said and she knew she sounded bewildered.

Greg patted her arm, his expression sympathetic. “I'm just glad you're okay. I was delayed on my way to collect you this morning and by the time I arrived at the suite you were gone. I was searching the grounds for you when the feds arrived and things got sort of chaotic around here. I ran into Ingrid on the way to her suite. She told me you were safe. I contacted Daniel immediately. I've got to tell you, he just about went crazy when we didn't know where you were.”

B.J. bit her lip, keeping her reaction to herself.

“Anyway, he wanted me to tell you that he's sorry Drake tried to put you in the middle. Daniel's really angry with himself for not anticipating that.”

“Just what's your connection to Daniel, anyway?” She was getting irritable enough to picture him as a dummy sitting on Daniel's knee and spouting Daniel's words, but it would just take too much energy to be that snide with him at the moment. The ups and downs of the morning had drained all the fight out of her. For now.

Greg shrugged. “He asked me to do him a couple of favors and he promised me a few in return.”

Obviously Greg wasn't going to be any more informative than Daniel had been. Still, she tried. “Where is he?”

“In all the uproar, he managed to slip away just as the feds arrived.”

“And what would have happened to him if he had stayed?” she demanded, staring fiercely into Greg's un-revealing dark eyes.

He only shrugged.

“You know how to call him. Will you call him now? I want to talk to him.”

“He wouldn't answer,” Greg said, his voice gentle now, a note of sympathy in it that made her shoulders straighten. “Now that he knows you're safe, he's probably turned off the phone.”

She wouldn't ask anything else of him, she vowed. If there was one thing she did not need, it was this guy's pity.

“Fine,” she said shortly. “I want to go home now.”

Greg nodded. “It will be safe to go back up to your suite now, if you'd like to pack. Daniel told me to be sure you take everything with you.”

All the clothes Daniel—or someone—had provided for her during her stay here. She shook her head. “There's nothing in the suite that I want.”

“You're sure?”

“Positive.”

“Oh, that reminds me.” He reached into his pocket and drew out two items that he pressed into her hand. “These are yours, I think.”
