Her sister shook her head. “We can’t live like this, sis. It’s not worth it.”

Heather folded her arms. “I can’t stop you from having your opinion, but don’t expect me to get on board if you’re thinking about talking to him.”

She didn’t enjoy disappointing her sister but how could Sonia be so blind? She could not trust their father—she could trust no man. Closing her eyes, Allen’s face flashed in Heather’s mind. He hadn’t given her any reason to doubt him—yet.

Perhaps Sonia was right. Was she living at all behind her walls? How would she tear them down? She’d been this way for as long as she could remember.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to say all that,” Heather said.

“I know.”

“I’ll work on it. Promise.”

Her sister smiled just as Heather’s cell rang. She pivoted to see her phone next to her robe. She grinned at the sight of Allen’s name. Drying her hands with her towel, she grabbed her phone.

Sonia smirked. “Is that my cue to leave?”

“Don’t be silly.”

“Heather’s got a boyfriend.” She teased in her sing-song voice. “Heather’s got a boyfriend.”

Heather swiped her phone to answer. “I hate you!”

“What?” Allen asked.

Her eyes widened. “Not you. Sonia.”

“I’m guessing it’s a sister thing?”

“Something like that.”

“How’s your evening going?”

“Amazing. Sonia treated me to the spa. I'm finally out doing something fun.”

Allen chuckled. “I guess that’s another difference. I enjoy being at home.”

“Why though? There’s no adventure there.”

“It’s peaceful.”

She leaned on the edge of the hot tub. “I guess that’s true. No drama.”

His voice lowered. “No distractions.”

Her grin grew wider. “Is this why you called? To tell me I need to appreciate home?”

“No, I want to know… if you’d like to take a field trip with me tomorrow.”

“Field trip?”

“I couldn’t think of a better word for it.”

She laughed. “Where?”

“You’ll see.”
