Emilia nods in that self-possessed way that children have, making us all chuckle again. But I don’t doubt it. Our little girl is smart, and I have the feeling she’s going to be running rings around all of us before too long.

I settle back in my chair with a contented sigh, looking out over the river. There might not be any fireworks this time, but that’s just fine. I have all the magic I need right in front of me.

“Looking forward to heading home tomorrow?” Sean asks, shuffling his chair closer to slip an arm around me as we sit in front of our emptied plates.

“Yes,” I say. “As much as I’ve loved this trip down memory lane, it will be nice to be home again.”

“Mommy,” Jenny pipes up, unexpectedly. “Can we take a koala home with us?”

We both laugh. “Maybe a stuffed koala, honey,” I tell her. “I don’t think they’d like the weather at home.”

Sean reaches for my hand on the table, and I smile. This table – it’s like everything else in our lives. A bit messy, a lot chaotic, with barely a free moment to ourselves. But this is family, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So long as I get my Sean for many years to come, I know we can handle whatever comes our way. And every day, I’m looking forward to the next adventure – because it turns out, you don’t need to travel the world to find something special every day.
