His brows dipped with concern. “You don’t remember?”

“No. Tell me.”

“Persy found you passed out behind the counter of the bakery long after closing time. That’s what we know. What we don’t know is how long you were unconscious.”

I nodded as his words sank in and I remembered a distinct feeling of nausea throughout the day. “Brain damage?”

Cal laughed. “No. Are you experiencing any symptoms that would make you think brain damage was a possibility?”

I closed my eyes and tried to remember anything to answer his question. “No. But I was reacting to smells in a strange way all morning. Even coffee made me want to gag.”

Cal nodded, his expression neutral.

“Where’s Casey? We are still married, right?” Panic started to set in because I wasn’t sure what was real and what was a dream. “Did I get hit in the head and left on the side of the road?”

“Yes. You suffered some slight memory issues, but according to Dr. Reynolds, your memories are turning. I sent Casey home to change and grab some clothes for you. He’ll be back any minute.”

“Okay. So, if my head is fine, what’s wrong with me?” Because it had to be something. Healthy people did just pass out at work. Did they?

“How have you been feeling lately, Megan?”

“Fine. A little out of sorts trying to get my memory back and expand the bakery business.” I let out a rushed sigh and shrugged. “Normal, at least normal for me as far as I can tell.”

“Exhausted? Tired when you shouldn’t be?”

I nodded. “Sometimes.”

“Nauseous?”

“All day today,” I groaned.

“Sensitive breasts?”

I nodded again. “Now that you mention it, they have been a little sensitive. I just figured my period was coming soon.”

“Nope. Not your period, Megan. You’re pregnant.”

Pregnant. That didn’t make sense. I mean, it made sense because Casey and I couldn’t keep our hands off one another, and I had to toss out a pack of birth control pills when I got home from my first stay in the hospital, but it seemed illogical. Impossible, even. I shook my head and sat up. “I’m sorry, did you say pregnant?”

Cal nodded. “I did. We ran a blood test, twice. You’ll need to make an appointment with an OB, of course, but my best guess is that’s why you passed out.”

“From being pregnant. How does that work?”

“Hormones released during pregnancy have a tendency to relax the blood vessels, which leads to a dramatic drop in blood pressure, which often leads to fainting.”

“Wow, you’re pretty smart. Ever consider a career in medicine?”

Cal placed an overly dramatic checkmark on the folder cradled in his arm and smiled. “Still a smartass, check.”

“Looks like I kept all of my best personality traits.”

“Lucky us.” Cal looked down again and when he looked up, he was all business. “Do you know what year it is?”

“2021. Still.”

He nodded. “Where do you work?”

“Sweet Treats bakery, which I own. Apparently.”

“All right. Good. Husband’s name?”

“Casey Simon Jackson.”

“Perfect. Date of birth?”

“Thirtieth of July.”

“Excellent. Your head is good, but I’m sure Reynolds will want to check you out himself. Otherwise you’ll be discharged in the morning.”

“Thanks, Cal.”

“My pleasure. And congratulations.”

I stared at him strangely for a second before I remembered. “Oh right, because I’m pregnant.” Pregnant. I needed to find a way to share the news with Casey and hope like hell he was excited about it. If he really loved me and didn’t mind that I might never turn back into the wife I was before, not exactly, then he would be happy.

Otherwise, single motherhood, here I come.

Sometime later the door flew open and Jen entered first, Bob just a step behind her. “Oh Megan, honey!” She rushed to the bed and wrapped her arms around me. “How are you feeling? You gave us all quite the scare.”

“Sorry.”

Bob chuckled. “Must be your favorite new pastime, giving the family collective heart problems.”

“Not my favorite. Maybe second favorite?”

Bob chuckled again before he crossed the room and dropped a kiss on my forehead. “Glad you’re feeling better, kiddo. Gotta keep you healthy for some more of Essie’s Peppermints.”

I blinked. “You liked them?”

“Loved them. I was thinking you might want to add a splash of peppermint schnapps to the mix, Mom used to sneak a nip here and there when she thought no one was looking.”

A laugh burst out of me. “Is that why she always smelled like peppermint?”

“Yep.”

Casey entered the room at that moment, looking scared and worried and little bit angry. “Casey. You’re here.”

“Where else would I be?” He tried for a smile that looked more like a grimace and I could only imagine the hell he’s been through the past few hours.

“How long have I been here?”

“Too damn long,” he growled and dropped the bag in his hand onto a chair before he came to me and pulled me in his arms. “I thought I’d lost you this time.”
