She pushed off the arms of the chair and stood. “Eleven year old Molly.”

“I knew it,” I grinned.

“I knew you’d say yes, but I like to keep the age and cuteness factor in my back pocket just in case you surgeons pull the too busy card.” She sighed and smiled down at me again. “Good job on the second proposal by the way. And congratulations.”

With a sigh, I leaned back in my chair and smiled. “I’m pretty proud of myself,” I admitted. “And thank you. For the congratulations and for helping Megan remember.”

“That’s what friends are for, Casey.” She glanced at her watch just as a knock sounded on the door. “Molly and her parents will be here at four. See you then.” She opened the door and Melanie stepped inside.

“Melanie, what can I do for you?”

Her expression was wary and I sat up tall, heart racing. On edge. “The police are here to speak to you.”

My gaze shot to Persy and fear and worry settled deep in my gut. “What happened?”

“I’ll check in on Megan. You deal with the boys in blue.” Persy rushed out of the office, phone in hand.

Less than a minute later two detectives entered my office, familiar solemn expressions on their faces. “Dr. Jackson.”

“Casey, please. How can I help you, detectives?”

“The men who attacked your wife have been apprehended.” The words hung in the air for a long time, and it took them even longer to sink in.

I waited for them to tell me they caught them in the act of attacking my wife again. That she’d passed out again and they were filing more serious charges against the scumbags.

“Are you all right, Dr. Jackson?” One of the detectives asked, but I didn’t pay attention to which one.

“Yes,” I waved off his concern. “I guess I was just waiting for the bad news. You caught them?”

“Tried to carjack a grandmother on the same road, only she was packing a pearl handled revolver. The one who hit your wife ended up with a bullet in his ass. The other laid on the ground and waited for law enforcement to show up.” He wore an amused expression and I wished I could have seen that for myself.

“Well that is good news. Thank you for letting me know.”

“We, uh, would have told Mrs. Jackson ourselves but with her memory issues, well we didn’t know how to proceed.”

“No problem. I’ll be sure to let her know.” In fact, it was just about time for lunch and I could use something sweet. And something to eat.

The bakery was filled with people, but they all had pastries and drinks, talking and laughing, and enjoying the overcast afternoon. A new employee stood behind the register, wiping down the counter with a serene smile. “Is Megan in?”

The woman looked up, smile still fixed in place. “She’s in the kitchen, I’ll go get her.”

“No need. I’m her husband.”

Her shoulders relaxed as she nodded towards the kitchen just as the door swung open and my wife bopped out of the kitchen with a tray of cinnamon buns resting on her forearms.

“Lookin’ good hot stuff.”

Megan looked up and flashed the widest, most beautiful smile I had ever seen. “Right back ‘atcha, handsome.” She winked and refilled the display case, giving me time to observe. She moved with purpose, each step full of energy and as usual. But a closer look revealed signs of exhaustion and strain around her mouth and eyes, the tension that held her shoulders at a stiff, awkward angle. She needed to rest, if not for her head, then for our baby’s sake. Megan shook her head. “Don’t look so worried, Casey, I’m fine.”

“I didn’t say a word.”

“Your face said all the words,” she laughed and rounded the counter to come to me, wrap her arms around me and kiss the hell out of me. Her tongue tasted like powdered sugar and vanilla, and all I wanted was to take those flavors and lick them off every inch of her body.

My hands found her ass and gave it a good squeeze that made my wife moan and press her body against mine. I pulled back first, out of breath, heat coursing through my veins. “Hi.”

Megan’s head fell against my shoulder and she laughed. “Hi to you too. What brings you by?”

I opened my mouth to tell her about the detectives’ visit but she was still talking, probably in the midst of a sugar high.

“What do you think of wedding cake pops? Individual but decorated? How about cheesecake bites that for a three layer wedding cake, a different flavor for each tier?” I didn’t have time to answer because she took my hand and dragged me into the kitchen. “What do you think if we have a combined stag night, boys and girls together? We could do something like hang out at the basketball courts like we used to, or the football field.” She laughed. “Why did we always hang out at abandoned athletic fields?”
