She gives me a baffled look. “You okay?”

I nod tightly, and as I walk to the door to tell Hastings, I know it’s going to be a long evening.

Yanking Ian’s chain is always fun.

I didn’t know he would find this outfit so appealing, but from the moment he saw me, he was aroused.

I stare at my computer screen smugly.

I have zero interest in this report right now. I know I am supposed to scour through this before George shows up. He was supposed to meet me three days ago, but he had to cancel. Apparently, he slipped and hurt his arm.

I find it odd that it would deter a workaholic like him from showing up to a meeting, but I don’t dwell on it for long.

Half-empty containers of Indian food lay on the small coffee table in front of the sofa. Ian is going through some documents, his mood black.

I watch him throw three different files into the trash bin, growling.

“Everything okay?” I ask, carefully.

“These employees,” his words are a snarl. “None of their files have been updated. The previous management was shit. The HR department is shit here.” He turns and presses the intercom button. “Hastings get in here!”

My eyes are wide as I watch him pace around the room, cursing under his breath. When Hastings walks in, wariness on his face, Ian snarls, “I want the whole HR team out by the morning! Send termination letters to all of them!”

Hastings pales. “But sir, that’s a ten people team. If they leave, we won’t—”

“Then, outsource the damn department and start creating a job description!”

Hastings sighs. “All right. But Lily will want to talk to you. She’s been here for the longest. She won’t go without a fight.”

Ian bares his teeth. “Is this the woman who takes two-hour lunch breaks?” The vicious smile on my lover’s face makes me pity whoever Lily is. “I would love to have a word with her.”

“Yikes,” I wince when Hastings leaves the room.

Ian scowls. “She’s been skimping money from the accounts.”

I blink. “But she’s in HR. How does she have access?”

Ian sinks into his chair, his expression dark. “A lot of these people have been demoted, and they’re usually the ones who are also taking two-hour breaks. She didn’t alter their files, and they’ve been receiving far above their paygrade.”

“What if she’s a sweet old grandma type?”

Ian gives me a look. “She’s in her late twenties, and the first thing she did when I showed up was make a play for me.”

My blood boils. “Is she attractive?”

“How would I know?” Ian says, absently, as he picks up another file. “I only have eyes for you.”

The calm, matter-of-fact tone in which he says that makes my pulse flutter. However, a vein of anger still remains. “Which floor does she work on?”

He pins me to the spot with his stare. “I don’t think so, babe. I want to fire her, not have her eyes clawed out before I can get to that.”

It seems that Ian isn’t the only one with the jealous streak. “So, if you and I hadn’t been together, would you still have thought she wasn’t attractive?”

Ian scoffs. “If you and I weren’t together, I would be chasing after you. My type is blonde, funny, sadistic, smart, and just a little bit crazy.”
