Heath smiled and stroked a curl from her cheek. “They showered and left about half an hour ago. They didn’t want to wake you but they both kissed you good-bye.” He chuckled and stroked his thumb over her lower lip. “Don’t pout. They’ll be home later.”
Her engagement ring sparkled in the candlelit room and she lifted it to look at it. “I didn’t dream it?”
Heath stretched on the bed and then closed his muscular arms back around her. “You didn’t dream it. You said yes to us. Soon this really will be your home.”
Stroking a fingertip over the brand-new belly dancer tattoo on his big biceps, she said, “All the sacrifices and trouble…have they been worth it?”
“Except for that lame-brained plan to protect you by breaking up with you, yeah, it’s all been worth it.”
“I like your tattoo. She’s pretty.”
“Seth’s work is unparalleled. All I did was bring him snapshots of you and he did the rest from memory, from Halloween.”
“I’ve wondered about that since I haven’t worn the costume for you again before this evening. Did it hurt?”
“It wasn’t unbearable.”
Feeling playful, Maizy snickered. “Oh, so what you’re saying is that it was no big deal. No sacrifice at all. My admiration of your intestinal fortitude is withering as we speak.”
He grimaced in pain and put his hand over the completely healed tattoo and said, “I was putting on a brave face for you, baby. It hurt so much I had to bite my tongue to keep from screaming.” She giggled as he put the back of his hand to his forehead. “But I bore it all for you so that you could be etched permanently in my flesh. ’Cuz that’s how much I looooove you, baby.”
Laughing at his melodrama, Maizy grabbed a pillow and whomped him over the head with it.

Mischief sparkled in his green eyes but she also saw the assurance that he’d always be there to make her smile. He pressed his lips to hers and whispered, “I love you, Maizy.”
“I love you, Heath.” Reaching up, she stroked her nails over his scalp through his short-cropped blond hair and said, “You make me laugh. Has that always come naturally to you?”
Heath shrugged and then groaned as she kept raking his scalp with her nails. “You don’t have to stop doing that for, like, a year, if you don’t wanna.” He kissed the tip of her nose and then his eyes became serious. “I learned early on that the funny guy could diffuse tense situations if he used his humor right.”
“When you were in foster care?”
He nodded. “Yeah, I was just a scrawny kid, the low man on the totem pole. One night, when the foster parents weren’t around, it was my turn for a beat down, and for once I couldn’t talk my way out of it. That was right about the time we met Cody. He and Spencer defended me. It’s been the three of us ever since. I like making you smile and laugh. How’s your booty?”
