With every step closer to him her heart beat a little faster, her blood boiled a little hotter. She should turn the other way and leave. What was the point in getting into a fight when she would be gone in less than twenty-four hours? He made it quite clear when he didn’t come after her that he was in it only for the game. And she made it quite clear that she wanted nothing more than his dick.

He stood up. The door disappeared behind his athletic body, the body of a triathlete.

When she stood just a couple of feet in front of him his lips stretched in a half smile. He could seduce her with one innocent curve of his lip, and it tore down any hope she had of maintaining her distance.

“Hi.” He didn’t take his eyes off her as she removed her keys from her purse and pushed past him.

“What are you doing here?”

“Carrie told me you were leaving tomorrow. I can’t let you leave without telling you how I feel.” He put his hand on her shoulder. “May I please come in?”

“I don’t think we have anything more to say to each other.” She turned the key in the lock and pushed open her door. Immediately the soft scent of lavender filled the air.

“You may not have something to say but I do.” He grabbed her chin with his hand and pulled her face toward him. “Let me in.”

It wasn’t a request. He said it with calm power. As if subliminally sending the message. She couldn’t say no.

He followed behind her and entered her luxury space then closed the door. She heard the lock click as she set her purse on the dining room table and shrugged out of her jacket.

“Nice place.”

She watched him look around. “Thank you.”

“I probably should have made an effort to come over here. See where you live.”

“This is where I live. Snoop around. No one seems to understand how I manage to live in a place like this on a yoga teacher’s salary.”

“That’s not what I’m thinking. I was talking about getting to know you better.”

He was taking this too far. Why was he acting like they were a couple?

“There was no need to know me that well. That was never in the rules from what I can remember.”

“True. But rules are always made to be broken.”

She smiled. The small change in her temperament must have signaled to him that she was ready to start talking.

He charged ahead. “I wanted strings.”

“Huh?”

His biceps peeked out from beneath his sleeve. He was wearing the jeans she loved, faded and form fitting.

“I wanted strings. I wasn’t happy with just the sex for sex’s sake. From the moment I saw you in my parents’ living room half-naked, wearing that white lacy thing, I knew you were the one I’ve been looking for.”

Part of her wanted to fling herself in his arms and walk into the sunset for a happily-ever-after. The other part wanted to run screaming from the room and never look back. There was too much potential for heartache if she let him into her life. Didn’t that already happen?

“Martina?” He cupped her face with his calloused hand. “Please don’t leave.”

“You can’t ask that of me.” He couldn’t. He shouldn’t. It wasn’t fair to either of them if she stayed. Martina would miss out on the satisfaction of accomplishing her dream, and Rob would end up hating her because she couldn’t give him what he wanted.

“I know it’s shitty of me, but this is how I feel. I know you feel the same way, too.”

“Rob, please…”

He pulled her close pressing their bodies together.

“I can’t give you what you want. I can’t give you forever.” She was done with the lies. She wouldn’t do what he did to her. “Carrie told me what you’re looking for. Forever. Someone to look at you like your mom looks at your dad.” He exhaled sharply. “I think it’s sweet. But I’m not your girl.”
