After he kicked the door closed behind

them, he strode into the room and dumped her, bouncing, on the bed. She scrambled to get away, but big hands grabbed her and she found herself facedown on the mattress, with her legs dangling off the side. Before she could object, her panties were down, and he’d swatted her hard.

“Ow!” She squirmed and ground her hips against the bed, hornier than she’d ever been in her life.

“Are you going to stay where I put you?”

“Probably not.”

“Well, at least you’re honest.” He sighed and got on the bed and stretched out on his back, the crisp white duvet the perfect backdrop to her mental photo shoot. When he propped his hands behind his head as though he had no intentions of doing anything sexual, she clenched her teeth in frustration.

“What are you doing?”

He shrugged. “I’m not sure if you’re worth sleeping with yet.”

“What?” She got to her feet and pulled up her underwear.

“I don’t stick my dick in every willing woman, Mila. We barely even know each other.”

She gaped at him, then shut her mouth. Blinked.

“Do you want my resume?” Frustration warred with irritation. Why was he suddenly balking?

“You seem to be popping up a lot lately,” he pointed out. “You made a joke about it earlier, but are you stalking me?”

Well, she was, but the wedding thing had been a coincidence.

“I honestly had no idea that was your brother’s wedding.” That much she could say honestly. She’d gotten good at lying to perps, but this was different. With Atlas she felt as if her cat and mouse game kept restarting and he kept getting to be the cat.

“And you came here just because you were curious about kink?”

She blushed so hard her cheeks hurt.

“Loke did give me his number, but only because he knew I was interested in you,” she admitted. God, it sounded so pathetic. “I wasn’t going to show up here, but then you weren’t at the store when I went to pick up my laptop.”

“And?”

“And . . . So I texted Loke and he told me when you were most likely to be here.”

He grumbled something about how it was hard being friends with asshole Viking therapists. “So what was your plan then? Trick me into sleeping with you, fake a pregnancy, and move into my house? How far does the weird go with you, Mila?”

Outraged, she shoved his chest, although with him lying down it didn’t do much. “You’re pretty fucking full of yourself!”

He grabbed the wrist of the hand she’d shoved him with and wrestled her down over his lap. Now she fought him for real, trying to get away so she could leave. She’d let herself get drawn in too far and she needed to get the hell out. If he was already thinking her behavior was suspicious, this didn’t bode well for the investigation. She’d definitely ask to be reassigned.

“You think you have the right to be angry at me for calling you on your behavior?” he grumbled. “What am I supposed to think—a woman like you chasing after me so hard?”

“A woman like me? What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You’re hot, Mila. It’s not like you have to throw yourself at people to get noticed. So why me?”

“You can’t just ask me that!”

“Why me?”

“Oh my god!” she complained, covering her face with her hands. “I don’t know. I don’t know! You’re not even my type.”

“No?”
