“I think I’ll send him a gift basket.” I grin.
I get up and sit facing her. I look her in the eye.
“And know this, Robin. Wherever you go, I will always be here, right by your side.”
FIVE YEARS LATER
It’s the week after Valentine’s Day. I’m standing in our bathroom, waiting. I am excited and nervous all at once. So much has changed over the last five years, and I have an idea it’s about to change again.
After our first Valentine’s Day together, Denton and I went home more in love than ever. I went back to work the next day and got everything in order, and the following week, I signed on all three of my prospects from the conference: Cartier, Vera Wang, and Jacobson Accounting. Their campaigns were all a huge success, and they all stuck with me afterward, although I still haven’t actually met Vera. Oh well, a girl can keep dreaming.
I don’t know how I managed to pull it all off, especially when I discovered I was pregnant, but I did. I loved being a mom, and I embraced it wholeheartedly, but my career was going from strength to strength, and I wasn’t about to give all of that up. Denton set up a day care at his office, and every day, he would go off to work with Jackson with him.
The next Valentine’s Day, Colin told me I could skip the conference, but I spoke to Denton, and we both agreed I should go, with him coming along. My mom agreed to take Jackson for a couple of days, and we had an amazing few days. I brought in another couple of big-name clients for the firm. I had lunch with Charles, which seemed to be becoming as much of a Valentine’s Day tradition as Denton and I having hot sex.
Two weeks after the conference, I found out I was pregnant again. When Ruby came along, it was damned hard work, but we got through it. I told Denton, the day after she was born, that there was no way we were making this a tradition. We had talked about kids, and we both agreed that we wanted two. Now we had them, one of each. I jokingly banned sex on Valentine’s Day.
Of course, that didn’t last, but I didn’t go to the conference the next year. I’d learned my lesson. I did sneak over to Denton’s office for a quickie though.
Late last year, Colin announced that he was retiring. I realized that I had stayed at the firm for as long as I had out of loyalty to him because he took a chance on me when I was an unknown kid. I made a decision that day, a decision that Denton fully supported.
The next day, I called Charles, who had become a friend as much as a business associate and told him my plan: to start my own company. He not only agreed to come with me, but he put the word out to a few of his contacts, and I had enough work to keep me and the small team I selected busy before I had even set up the company. Margo chose to stay with the existing company, so I guess I never will get to meet Vera. Dave came with me.
I opened the company officially in January of this year, and I knew I couldn’t skip the conference again like I had since Ruby came along. I roped my mom into having the kids again, and Denton and I returned to the Beverly Wilshire.
The conference went even better than I had imagined. Rolex had seen the success Cartier was having with us, and they signed on the day of the conference. I have been in business for just over a month, and I am already looking to take on more staff and expand out to a larger office space.
