‘Me neither.’ His eyes gathered her in. ‘I was right about the nightdress.’

She looked down at the ghostly gown. ‘Yes, you were.’

They stood staring at each other across the room, like two people seeing each other for the first time.

Sam felt the blood which thundered inside his head. ‘Fran—’

She opened her eyes a little wider. If only her limbs didn’t feel so heavy, her body so lethargic. ‘What is it?’

He meant to say, ‘You look beautiful,’ but it came out as, ‘I want to kiss you.’

It was so heartstoppingly simple and direct that the words made her shiver. She meant to say, ‘Sam, maybe this isn’t such a good idea’—but it came out as, ‘I’m not stopping you.’

He laughed then, but with pleasure, not triumph, pushing the door quietly shut behind him as he began to walk towards her, to cup her face between his hands. ‘You haven’t asked me why I’m here,’ he whispered provocatively.

‘I thought you wanted to kiss me.’

‘Yes. I do.’ He paused deliberately. ‘Among many other things.’

In the half light she blushed. ‘Are you trying to shock me now?’

‘No. I’m giving you the opportunity to kick me out.’

‘An

d if I don’t?’

‘Then I’m going to spend the rest of the night making love to you, honey.’

Her eyes were like saucers, dark with question. ‘But what about the others?’

He stiffened and scowled. He had thought she had worked through all that stuff about Rosie and the vultures. ‘What others?’ he growled.

‘Your mother.’ She could feel his breath warm on her lips. ‘And sisters.’

‘I’m not planning to make a noise,’ he whispered. ‘Are you?’

‘No. Oh!’ But it wasn’t easy. Not easy at all. Not when he had started kissing her like that and running his hands down the sides of her nightgown, so that the fabric clung to her body like skin. She wanted to gasp aloud with sheer pleasure, because where his hands led, his mouth followed, lips warm and soft and seeking as they suckled her breast through the filmy material.

‘Is that good?’ he smiled against the damp fabric.

‘Don’t ask questions to which you already know the answers!’

He tightened his arms around her waist and she shivered involuntarily, because oh, she had missed the feel of a man’s arms around her like this.

He could hear the distracted quickening of her breathing and made himself stop kissing her, smoothing her hair down as he tenderly kissed the tip of her nose, and then each cheek. ‘Much more of this and I’m going to push you up against the wall and do it right there, honey,’ he groaned.

Fran was so turned on she could barely speak. ‘So?’

He laughed with anticipation, but shook his head. ‘No way! Not the first time. Bed,’ he said firmly.

‘Bed,’ she echoed, her whispered word fierce with need. Yet for all her bravado, she felt terribly shy as she let him lead her to the tiny bed, and he gave an exaggerated sound of horror as he stared down at it.

‘Just a touch on the small size,’ he observed ruefully. ‘Maybe we should creep upstairs and find somewhere more comfortable.’

‘Like where?’

‘Well, the other bedrooms are all taken.’ There was a pause. ‘That just leaves mine.’
