‘Honestly! Don’t you know that every single positive event has a negative aspect to it? Our babies are going to be the most wonderful babies ever to be born, but we’d be fools if we closed our minds to some of the things which happen when you have them.’

His eyes were tender. ‘Such as?’

‘Well, babies make you tired. And put you off sex—’

‘Oh, really?’ he teased softly.

‘Well, I can’t quite see that happening,’ she admitted, and blushed.

‘No.’ He lifted her chin and looked at her with love. At the soft green sweater which made her eyes look like bay leaves, and the sexy white jeans she wore. Her hair hung shimmering almost to her waist.

Fran had recognised that she had evolved a style of dressing to balance her husband’s theatrical image. Now she didn’t have to do that any more. The sensible, neutral clothes had gone. She had thrown off the shackles of her former life, and she was free to just be Fran Lockhart.

‘Twins!’ he said again, only now the smile on his face had broken into an unfettered grin and he picked her up in his arms and began to kiss her over and over again, while outside the waves of the Irish sea lapped like music beneath them.
