While reading the accounts, Alexi could feel Kain’s rage and will for destruction, his eagerness for not only energy, but blood as well. “Why? Why would you try to take revenge?” Because it was obvious that revenge was what Kain sought. There was hatred and frustration, and Alexi couldn’t understand any of it. There was something there and he couldn’t grasp it, but he instinctively knew that particular thing had to be the key to Kain Svjetlo’s mind and soul.

Alexi put the files inside his desk drawer just as Kain entered the room. With his back turned to the blond, he closed his eyes and tried to picture him only by listening to his movements. The soft creak of the door, one strong arm stretched to close it, Kai

n’s light steps on the wooden floor. Alexi took a deep breath and almost smiled to himself. “I’m pathetic.”

“Still studying, big boy?” The blond was standing in front of the closed door, one hand on his hips. He smiled cheerfully, although he couldn’t quite explain why. Lately, it just happened whenever he saw his roommate.

Alexi straightened his back and turned around. He looked right into Kain’s blue eyes. For a couple of moments, they held each other’s gaze, even though for entirely different reasons. While Kain took the time to admire his roommate’s dark green eyes, Alexi couldn’t deny his inevitable attraction to the beautiful creature in front of him. He caught himself staring at Kain’s neck, wondering what that smooth skin would feel like, taste like. He licked his lips and went back to the unnaturally faded blue eyes. He would have loved to close the distance which separated them, grab the blond’s handsome face between his hands, and tilt his head up to study each and every detail of his eyes.

Kain cocked an eyebrow, unsure what to make of his roommate’s weird behavior.

“The new prisoners are a handful,” he said. “Obviously, Mikal doesn’t have the patience to deal with them and he finds excuses to go wandering around. I swear he’s the worst incubus.” He took his jacket off and threw it on the bed. He went to the wardrobe to look for some clean clothes. “Also, the best procrastinator.”

“You’re so unlike him.” Alexi sat down on his own bed, watching Kain rummage through his clothes.

“That’s almost an insult.”

Alexi chuckled. “No, it really isn’t. Mikal’s a major ass.”

“I am, too.”

“Fair, but at least you care.”

Kain huffed and turned around, his brows furrowed in mock anger. “I don’t.”

“Right. That’s why you’re practically doing his job.”

“I wouldn’t if the stupid Spprigans were able to handle the new prisoners’ energies. Couldn’t care less about his job, but I’d rather not have Lure attacked by a bunch of demons from the inside.”

Alexi was silent for a few seconds. There was so much more to the blond. “Have you managed to drain them of energy?”

“For now. Truth is, there are too many prisoners in Oriens and that’s why the Spprigans can’t keep them weak and obedient anymore. It gets worse when new demons with stronger auras are brought in. We should dispose of some of them.”

“You know only Lilith can make that call.”

“She’s grown soft.”

“Careful, Kain. You wouldn’t want that to reach her ears.”

Kain laughed, and Alexi joined him. Maybe the other cambions were still afraid of Lilith, but the two of them had long figured out Lilith’s power and knew how to block it. After working for over 100 years for the Academy, they had come to see the incubi and succubi as equals rather than superiors or mentors. It helped that as beautiful and perfect as they were on the outside, in their human form, they were just as obnoxious and faulty on the inside. They usually made themselves guilty of the most pitiful weaknesses: sloth, vanity, disinterest, boredom, envy, and the list could continue.

“I saw Sophie today.” Alexi decided to get to the serious stuff. This light chitchat they were having was making him uncomfortable.

“Is that so?” Kain turned back to his clothes.

“I scheduled our first session for tomorrow evening. If you’re busy filling in for Mikal, it’s okay. I can handle it.”

Kain turned around, curiosity dancing in his faded eyes. “I’m not busy.”

“I just thought… You don’t have to go out of your way to…”

“This is ridiculous. If you don’t want me there, just say it. I won’t care, but it might be good for you to get it out of your system.”

Alexi sighed and rolled his eyes to show his annoyance. “I don’t care if you’re there or not, princess.”

“Don’t call me that.” Kain’s voice was more of a growl.

“If you listened to the rest of it, maybe you’d understand the point I’m trying to make.” Alexi waited for Kain to protest again, but seeing the blond was silent, he continued: “It might be overwhelming for Sophie to work with both of us, especially since I don’t have a plan, and I assume you don’t either. Our methods are so different that I don’t even understand how we manage to get the same results. I was thinking that it might be a good idea to take turns on the first couple of sessions, until Sophie gets used to each of us.”
