When the kiss broke, I beamed up at him. Already he looked different, scruffy and smiling and relaxed. Free, maybe for the first time.

“I think you should pick your three favorite suits and we’ll put the rest in storage,” I suggested.

“Is storage the barn?”

“Maybe.”

“That should keep them fresh.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “We have an actual climate controlled storage building out near the cannery. They’ll be fine. Plus, it’ll leave room for something else.”

“What’s that?”

“Go look in the dresser.”

His face quirked, but he did as I’d asked, pulling open the top drawer. A laugh busted out of him.

It was full of jeans. As was the one beneath it and the one under that.

“You bought me all these jeans?” he asked, fishing through them.

“The women of this town happily donated on the promise I’d parade you around downtown on a schedule.” When he looked over his shoulder at me with concern, it was my turn to laugh. “Yes, I bought them all for you. The town biddies can thank me later.”

“How much do I owe you?”

“Oh, don’t start that.”

“What?”

“Keeping score. What’s mine is yours, darlin’.”

He closed the drawer and stalked to me with a dangerous look on his face. “Everything that’s yours?” When he reached me, he filled his palms with my ass and squeezed.

“Mmhm. Everything.”

“Good. I’m keeping it.”

“No returns, no exchanges.”

“Final sale,” he added.

“As-is.”

At that, his face softened. “It’s the only way I want you. Just like this. Just as you are.”

I held his jaw, smiled the smile that was only his. “I love you. Do you know that?”

“You keep saying it, but I’m having a hard time believing.”

“How can I convince you?”

Angling for my lips, he said, “Oh, I can think of a few ways.”

And with a kiss, I did the best convincing I’d ever done.

So well, in fact, that he’d believe me for the rest of our lives.
