According to the sign, the Silver Spoon Bridge was the only way into the town. Made sense since Destiny was on a peninsula. The lake around it was like a mirror, reflecting the blue sky.

“It’s breathtaking.” She sighed. The town was charming. Who would’ve thought it was home to two of the largest companies in the United States? Two Black Knights Enterprises and O’Leary Global had their headquarters in Destiny. Back in her former life, before the fake Scott Knight had approached her, Jena had never considered skimming from either company as their reputations were stellar. TBK and O’Leary were incredibly good to their employees and their customers.

They turned on West Street. The park at the center of Destiny was lovely. On each of its four corners was a dragon statue. As Matt made a right on South Street, she saw two buildings up ahead.

“Is one of those two big buildings TBK’s headquarters?”

“The one on the right is TBK,” Sean told her. “Our place is behind it only a block away on Second Street. We have the corner house and face the lake. You’re going to love it.”

When they drove in front of their home, she was impressed by its curb appeal. The yard was groomed to perfection.

“It’s beautiful.”

She walked inside and couldn’t believe how neat and orderly everything was. The only clue that two single men lived here was the giant flat-screen television on the far wall.

“You hungry? We skipped lunch,” Matt said.

“There goes your stomach again,” she said with a laugh. “All I need is a snack or a piece of fruit.”

“I think I’ll fire up the skillet and make us some burgers.”

“Now you’re talking,” Sean said. “I could use a beer. How about you two?”

“Absolutely,” Matt answered, grabbing a pan from one of the cabinets.

“I would love one, Sean. Let me help you cook. Do you have lettuce, tomatoes, and onions?” she asked. “I like the works.”

Sean opened the fridge and pulled out three beers. “Not only that, but we have cheese and bacon, too.” He handed her one of the icy cold cans.

“You’re singing my song, buddy.” Matt turned on the burner and took one of the beers from Sean.

The three of them prepared the meal together, laughing.

She couldn’t remember the last time she had so much fun making lunch. The aroma of the patties made her mouth water.

When they sat down to eat, she devoured half her food in a flash. “Matt, you should go on Food Network with your burgers. You could have a whole show.”

“Wait a second,” Sean said. “We helped him.” Then he burst into laughter.

She and Matt joined in.

They’d been through so much together in the past couple of days it was good to have a light moment. Even if she’d had money to stay at a hotel, she was happier being with them instead. She felt safe.

“Let me help clear the dishes,” she said. “I can take a bath after that and then we can go into TBK and get to work.”

“Honey, we’ve got it,” Sean said. “We’ve got three bathrooms here. You use the master. There’s a garden tub in there with jets. I’m sure you would enjoy that.”

“You’re right about that. I would love a long soak.”

“I have a shirt of mine you can wear while we wash your clothes.” He grabbed her hand, making her warm inside. “Let me get it for you and show you where the tub is.”

Jena stepped out of the tub. The warm water had worked wonders on her tense muscles. How long had she been in the bathroom? She wasn’t sure. At least an hour.

She put on Sean’s T-shirt, which came to her knees. It was black with a Harley-Davidson logo on the front and an image of a motorcycle on the back, which made her wonder if he rode a bike.

She walked back into the bedroom to grab her dirty clothes, but they were gone, the space neat as a pin. They were the cleanest bachelors she’d ever seen in her life, and she’d seen quite a few single men at the track when her dad was still alive.
