“I appreciate the Stone’s help, but it’s my job, not theirs.”

“Hey, buddy. It’s both our jobs.”

Jaris shook his head, a sign that he hadn’t been born blind. “I know, but one of us has to stay here to protect her. Jason has assigned several deputies to keep tabs on things around her house, but we both know that someone has to be inside with her. Remember, she can’t put any pressure on her leg until tomorrow. So, that job falls to you.”

“A job I’ll gladly take.”

Jaris smiled. “I’ll spend the night at the ranch and take care of the boys. I’ll see you at the next Dragon Week event tomorrow. Emmett will be here in just a second. I need to get going.”

Something about the way he’d been acting the last twenty-four hours, including now, didn’t sit well with her. “What’s really the matter, Jaris? You don’t seem like yourself.”

He sighed but didn’t say anything for a moment.

“Please. Talk to me.” She heard a honk.

“That’s Emmett. We can talk tomorrow, Kaylyn. You and Chance have a nice evening.”

Jaris walked out with Sugar, shutting the door behind him.

She closed her eyes tight, hurting deep inside. “Chance, he’s holding back something. I can tell he’s struggling.”

“I believe you might be right, but what is he struggling with?”

She grabbed Chance’s hand. “I was hoping you could shed some light on it. You’re his friend. Do you have any idea what it might be?”

“Not really, but don’t worry, sweetheart. We’ll talk to him about it tomorrow.” Chance leaned over and pressed his lips to hers, sending a wonderful shiver up and down her spine.

Without warning, Chance stood and lifted her out of the wheelchair. “I thought you might be ready to get out of your chariot.”

She looked into his chocolate eyes. “Past ready.”

“Would you like to go to the bedroom or just sit on the sofa for a little while? And I do mean for a little while. I’ve already determined our final destination for tonight, sweetheart.”

She grinned. “Why, Mr. Reynolds, aren’t you being forward?”

He kissed her again, making her dizzy with want. He traced her lips with his tongue. “It’s just the beginning, baby. I’ve waited a long time to hold you in my arms. There’s much more to come.”

“I would like to experience whatever you have in mind. I’m sure it will be wonderful.” Her body was warm. She wanted him from the top of her head to the tip of her toes—and everywhere in between. She’d dreamed about being with him since their kiss under the mistletoe. “Let’s continue this in the bedroom.”

“You’ve got a deal, baby.”

Gazing at his handsome face, she wrapped her arms around his neck. “You’re quite the kisser, Mr. Reynolds.”

“And so are you, Miss Anderson.” He brought his mouth to hers once again, claiming her with his lips.

When he ended the kiss, she found it hard to catch her breath as he carried her to the bedroom. He lowered her gently down onto the bed and began unbuttoning her shirt.

“I’ve waited so long to feel your body, Kaylyn.” Chance’s words sounded deep and so very intense, making her tingle.

“I want you to see all of me with your touch, honey.”

With her shirt agape, he stretched out beside her on the bed. He didn’t bring his hands to her breasts at first, but touched her face instead, tracing every line, seeing her in his way.

“You’re so beautiful, Kaylyn. The most beautiful woman in the world.”

She smiled, looking at his ebony skin. “My face hasn’t changed much since you last touched it.”

“Still beautiful, but I’m touching you with my heart completely open now, baby. It’s different. Wonderful. Overwhelming. I love you, Kaylyn.”
