“What are you meeting with Phoebe about today?”

Sylas answered first. “She wants one of us to come work for her.”

“She wha

t?”

“She has an opening,” Nic said. “She contacted me last week and asked me to apply. Today is my interview.”

“Same for me,” Sylas said.

“No one knows the office better than me and I take my bar exam next week. Why would she need to hire you?”

Nic glared at Sylas. “Maybe she’s in need of a new receptionist.” Then he grinned. “Don’t you think Sylas would be good at that, Ash?”

Sylas chuckled. “I hardly think so, Nic, but you might want to consider it.”

Why is this happening to me? “We don’t need another lawyer. Phoebe and I are doing just fine.”

“During our phone interview, she told me that the practice has grown quite a bit in the past few years,” Sylas said.

“She told me the same thing during our interview,” Nic added. “Maybe she just wants help to carry some of the load and continue expanding. I’m her man. I will get the job, Ash. Won’t it be great working together?”

Sylas shook his head. “And how do you know that I won’t get the job?”

Despite the laughs and smiles, Ashley could tell that the animosity between Nic and Sylas was still just as hot as when she’d ended it with them. “Did you two fly here together?”

“We were on the same plane,” Nic said in a flat tone.

The little bit of hope that had sprung up that they might be able to be friends again was melting away. She felt responsible for the rift that had driven them apart. They had been good friends. Now, they barely tolerated each other’s presence.

Desirae returned with her order. “Here you go, Ash.”

Normally she would have paid with the practice’s credit card, but wanting to get back to confront Phoebe about this mess, she handed Desirae her own cash. “Keep the change.”

“You need a receipt?”

She stood. “I’ll get it later. I need to get back to work.”

“You got it.” Desirae left again.

Nic and Sylas stood.

“I’ll see you guys shortly at the office.”

“I want to ask you to dinner,” Nic said. “I’ll be in town for a couple of days.”

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”

“Just as friends.” Nic smiled. Was he serious? Was that even possible?

“I don’t know, Nic.” She looked at Sylas, but she couldn’t read him. What was he thinking? “How long are you in town?”

“Same as Nic. A couple of days.”

“Let me buy you dinner, Ash.” Nic continued pressing. “You could fill me in on what it’s like to work for Phoebe.”

“Let me think about it. I’ll tell you after your meeting with her.” Ashley rushed out of the diner. She wanted to meet with Phoebe herself, before Nic and Sylas arrived. She needed answers. What the hell is she thinking?
