He was right about that. Jack had seen that look in his mother’s eyes before, and it usually meant there was a lecture about to happen.

Sure enough, his mother led Carol to their dads, Bill and Abe, not Jack and his brothers. Then his mom turned around and headed straight for them alone.

“Brace yourself, brothers. She’s about to let us have it.” Tom shook his head.

“What for?” Will asked.

“I guess we’re about to find out,” Jack stated.

Surprisingly, his mother didn’t blast them, but instead said softly, “I’m so proud of you boys. I never doubted you would pick the right girl, but she is beyond my expectations as my new daughter-in-law.”

Jack knew this was the calm before the storm. Mom always was tender before the big explosions. His commanders in Korea would’ve definitely benefited from sitting in her class about how to conduct a sneak attack.

Mom continued, “I already love this girl like my own daughter. If any of you boys ever hurt her, you won’t only have my wrath to deal with, but you’ll have your dads’, too. Understand?”

“Yes, ma’am,” they all said in unison.

“Boys, you know that this girl is inexperienced…in the bedroom?”

Jack had already discussed that fact with Tom and Will. It had been very clear that Carol was a virgin to all of them. Sure, there had been heavy petting, but she had always stopped them when things got too hot. He’d actually known after only a week of being with her in San Francisco that she was the kind of woman he wanted to bring home to his parents.

“Well, are you going to answer me or not?”

Jack answered, “We know, Mom.”

Tom and Will nodded

“You know she was a little confused about this wedding? I don’t know why, but I’m sure you can put your three pointy heads together and figure it out.”

Carol was confused? That explained so much about how she’d been acting. Why? They’d all asked her last night at dinner and she’d said yes. It just didn’t make sense.

“Your dads and I raised you boys on how to treat a woman. I believe you’ve learned your lessons well, but now you have to prove it. Your bride is like a new rosebud just beginning to open up into full bloom. Promise me you will treat her with care.”

“Mom, I love her.” Jack was so pleased how protective his mother was being for Carol. “Of course I will.”

“I love her, too.” Will hugged her. “I’ll be good to her, Mom.”

“I’ve never loved anyone like I love Carol, Mom.” Tom kissed her on the cheek. “I would never do anything to hurt her.”

“Look at my boys. You’re all grown up and married.” She smiled broadly. “You’ve made your mother proud. Let’s go get your bride.”

Jack opened the front passenger door of Will’s Cadillac for his new bride. She stepped out and gazed at his cabin, which he hadn’t seen since shipping off to East Asia.

She’d changed clothes at the community center. Now, she wore a blue mid-length dress, which was tight enough to accentuate her gorgeous curves. The skirt portion hit below her knees and the top scooped low enough to show a tempting scant amount of her cleavage. She wore black high heels that immediately drew his attention to her lovely legs.

Carol was shivering, likely from nerves, not from cold, since the air was warm outside. Still, he took off his jacket and placed it around her.

Her long eyelashes fluttered. She looked so beautiful.

“Thank you,” she said. “I like how your place looks, Jack.”

“That pleases me, honey,” Jack said, and then he turned to Tom and Will. “Clearly, you guys took real good care of it while I was away. When did you add the front porch for me?”

“In March,” Will said. “Hopefully it looks like the designs you sent to us.”

“It’s perfect.” He’d missed being in Wilde, and now with his new wife by his side, he couldn’t think of anywhere on earth he would rather be than home.
