“I heard you.” He wouldn’t look at her.

“Wes talk to me.”

Wes pulled off to the side of the deserted lake road.

“Is it a date?”

“Of course not! We’re friends.”

Wes wiped his hand over his face.

“He likes you more than just friends Jo. You know that right?”

Jo hung her head. “I think if I allowed it he would want to take it further.” She admitted.

“Jo how would you feel if I told you that Jill and I were going out for drinks, just as friends?”

“Oh sheesh.”

“If you want to do dinner with him you can. You’re your own woman, but don’t ask me to like it or even accept it.”

“No you made your point.”

Jo called Nick’s number and put the phone on speaker signaling for Wes to remain quiet.

“Hey Jo where are you? We have a date remember?”

“Uh Nick about that. I’d be happy to still meet you for dinner but I would be bringing Wes along.”

“What? Come on Jo why?”

“Nick I really, really like him.” Jo spoke into her phone as she looked up into Wes eyes. “I don’t want to do anything to mess that up. It's too perfect.” Wes’ eyes held hers and she couldn’t look away from him.

“Jo, he’s going to hurt you again.”

“He might.” She said quietly. Wes was shaking his head no. “But for now I just don’t want there to be any blurred lines.”

“What the hell Jo?”

“I’m sorry Nick. I do consider you to be my friend, but I don’t want to do anything that might hurt Wes.”

“Okay Jo I get it." Nick paused, "When he lets you down I’ll still be here for you.” Wes could hear the disparagement in Nick’s voice; the line went silent as Nick hung up.

“Ouch.” Jo said.

“Thank you Jo.” Wes said placing his hand on her thigh.

“Now remember you can’t go out with any women friends either!” She teased.

“Jo, I don’t have women friends. For the record you’re the first woman I think I’ve even liked.”

Jo unbuckled from her seatbelt and kissed Wes until they were breathless. She then returned to her seat and buckled herself back in.

“You also owe me a dinner mister.” She said laughing.

Wes gave her a big smile. “That I can do baby!”

The next week Jo and Wes were remained busy. Wes had started to go into the office, each day staying longer, and Jo earnestly worked on her article. On Friday night Jo sang at the bar, while Wes sat at a nearby table the entire time. It felt good to sing, it’s something she had always loved to do and the big bonus was she was being paid well for it. Jo was starting to feel the monetary pinch of not having a steady job. She was still waiting to hear back from a few places that she’d sent her resume too. She opted not to share her financial woes with Wes because she knew he’d try to give her money and she could no way accept it.
